GEORGE A. BLAKELY.
Prominent in the newspaper circles of Canora district is George A.
Blakely, owner and publisher of the Canora Advertiser. He was born
in Amprior county, Ontario, on the 7th of December, 1896, a son of Robert
and Matilda (Parker) Blakely. The father engaged in contracting for
many years and was active in the construction of many dams in this
section of the country.
In the acquirement of his education George A. Blakely attended the
public schools of his birthplace and on reaching man's estate engaged in
the newspaper business. In 1914 he took charge of the Grand View
Exponent at Grand View, Manitoba, which he published until 1920. In
that year he came to Canora and purchased the Canora Advertiser, of
which he is sole owner and publisher. There is no phase of the news-
paper business with which Mr. Blakely is not thoroughly familiar and
his paper is one of the representative sheets in the district and province.
He is a writer of ability and his editorials are lucid, interesting articles
on present-day situations, and the Canora Advertiser enjoys a large and
ever-increasing circulation.
In 1915 Mr. Blakely was married to Miss Vinnie Lee, a native of
Johnstown, North Dakota, and to them two children have been born:
Rae and Albert. Although the greater part of his time and attention
is devoted to his newspaper interests, Mr. Blakely is very public-spirited
and is never too busy to lend his aid to the furtherance of any movement
for the benefit of the community at large. Fraternally he is identified
with the Masons and the Knights of Pythias. His religious faith is that
of the Presbyterian church.
