Capt. Howard when asked Saturday if it was true that he scalped a dead foe after the fight at Batoche, said it was not. What he did do was to cut off as a tropy the scalplock of Young White Cap, son of Old White Cap, chief of a band of renegade Sioux, who years ago were driven out of Minnesota for being engaged in a massacre. Capt. Howard says other officers also helped themselves to hairy souvenirs from the heads of dead Indians, but no scalping was done or act of brutality perpetrated. Young White Cap was found with nine bullet holes in his body, all made by the Gatling Gun worked by Capt. Howard. The scalp lock referred to is now exhibited as a trophy in the room of the machine platoon of state militia, of which Capt. Howard has command, and which is located in the national guard armory.

A Humboldt dispatch says a scouting party of Toronto body guards left here Thursday, and, after a long chase, captured Chief WhiteCap and some of his band. They were brought into camp and placed under guard, awaiting orders from Gen. Middleton. White Cap;s brother and a scout named Peter McDonald were arrested in following up the trail.
