MEDLOSKI – Dominick Medloski, 90 of the Woodlight district, passed away at home on November 17, 1972. The funeral was held at Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Sturgis and burial in the Woodlight Cemetery. He was born in Poland and came to Canada about 1910 and worked as a miner for many years at Rose Bud and Drumheller, AB. He married Anne Yaremko in 1918. In 1929, they moved to a farm in the Sturgis district, where he resided until his death. Predeceased by a sister Cecelia and a brother Tony, he is survived by his wife; a daughter Mary Chorney of Sturgis; a son Joseph of Sturgis; three grandchildren and a great grandchild.

SMUD – Albert Smud / Zmut, age 36 of Sturgis, died on November 21, 1981 in the Saskatoon University Hospital. Funeral held in the Alliance Church, Sturgis and burial in Woodlight Cemetery. Born on May 1, 1945 at Preeceville, he was educated at Woodlight School. He worked at Lynn Lake, Red Lake, an asbestos mine in Ontario and for the CNR. Predeceased by his father, Peter, a sister Jean, he is survived by his mother, Annie; a brother, Nick of Hudson Bay an a sister, Judy Zip of Hudson Bay.

SMUD – Annie Smud, 77 of Sturgis, died on March 27, 1995 in Hudson Bay Hospital. Funeral service was held in the Sturgis Evangelical Church and burial in Woodlight Cemetery. She was born on June 6, 1917, in Tadmore to Nick and Katherina Ilnitski. She was educated at Forest Hill School in the Tadmore district. On October 31, 1944, she married Peter Smud and they settled on a homestead in the Woodlight district. In 1969, they moved from the farm to the Gold Bank district, where they operated a country store, Smud’s Corner Store, until 1970. After Peter died in 1970, she moved into the town of Sturgis. She resided in Sturgis until December 1994, when she took ill and had a brief stay in Hudson Bay, until her death. Her interests included crafts, gardening, visiting and listening to music. Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Peter; a daughter Joan and a son Albert, and a brother Joseph Ilnitski, she is survived by a son, Nick (Marianne) of Drayton Valley; a daughter, Judy (Allen) Zip of Hudson Bay; three sisters, Mary Popoff of Saskatoon, Rose (Steven) Fylyshtan of Kelowna, BC and Lucy (Dale) Duperreaulto of Tumblere Ridge, BC; and six grandchildren

SMUD – Helena Smud (Zmut), 83 of Preeceville, and formerly of Stenen, passed away May 4, 2000 at Preeceville Hospital. She was born September 10, 1916, northwest of Stenen. She attended Woodlight School and helped her parents and local farmers on the farm. She later worked in Sturgis and was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Women’s organization. She married Demetro Smud on November 8, 1950, at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church north of Stenen. Predeceased by her husband, Demetro, her parents, Sam and Antonia (Firomski) Gogal, a brother and sister in infancy, a brother Joseph, and three sisters, Mary, Pauline and Magda, she is survived by a son, Thomas of Stenen; three brothers, Edward, Mike and Thomas, all of Norquay, and sisters, Nellie Gogal of Edmonton and Verna (Stanley) Orheim of Delta, BC

SMUD – Metro (Dmetro J.) Smud (or spelled Zmut), 69 of Stenen, died on February 21, 1984 in the Preeceville Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Funeral service was held in St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Stenen. Born on October 26, 1914 in the Woodlight district, he was educated at Woodlight and Maloneck Schools. He married Helen Gogal in St. Mary’s Church at Stenen on November 8, 1950. They farmed north of Stenen and he was employed in the bush camp as a sawyer. Predeceased by his, Evan in 1941; his mother, Dora in 1950; and a brother, Pete in 1966; he is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Thomas of Stenen; a brother Bill of Vancouver; a step-brother, Joseph Zielkowsky of Stenen and a sister, Mary Tanasiuk of Hudson Bay.

TANASIUK – Ed Tanasiuk, 77 of Hudson Bay, and formerly of Stenen, passed away December 23, 1995. Funeral service held in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Hudson Bay and burial in the Woodlight Cemetery. He was born on August 5, 1918, in Moose Jaw to Mike and Dora (Chomyn) Tanasiuk. He moved with his parents to the Hyas area in the early 1920’s. After a few years, they moved to the Gold Bank district, north of Stenen to farm. He married Mary Smud on July 29, 1941. Soon after wards he was drafted into the Canadian Army. Due to poor health, he was able to serve overseas and received an honorable discharge. He worked for various sawmills in the area and in 1970 was hired by Simpson Timber in Hudson Bay. They moved there in 1971, and he continued with Simpson Timber as a night watchman. He later worked as a chip operator until retirement in 1983. Predeceased by his parents, two infant children and a sister, Mary Samuelson, he is survived by his wife, Mary; three daughters, Doreen (Maudest) Yurkiw of Hyas, Annette (Art) Fincaryk of Sturgis and Marianne (Blaine) Day of Prince Albert; two brothers, Nick (Arlene) and Willie (Ceceil) Tanasiuk, both of Kinuso, AB; a sister Annie Wasylyk of Kinuso; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

YAREMKO – Anna Yaremko (nee Trishchuk) was born in 1862 in Austria. In 1910, Anna, her husband John and their five children, Elex, Joe, Dan, Anna and Nick, immigrated to Canada from Smohiw, Ukraine. They settled on a homestead in the Woodlight district, sixteen miles northeast of Sturgis. They lived there until John’s passing in 1930. Anna lived with her daughter, Anna Medloski till her passing on November 15, 1941.

YAREMKO – Elex Yaremko was born on August 2, 1894, the oldest son of John and Anna Yaremko. He came to Canada in 1910 with his parents and siblings and settled on a farm in the Woodlight district. In February 1921, he married Mary Kmet of Stenen and they farmed northeast of Sturgis. The first few years of their marriage, Elex worked for farmers in the Canora/Yorkton area during the summer months. They had ten children: Katie, Annie, Mary, Gene, Tillie, John, Rose, Mike, Marion and Boris. Elex passed away February 11, 1963.

ZIELKOWSKY – Joseph Zielkowsky, 81 of Stenen, passed away in his home on or about June 12, 1986. Funeral was held in the Stenen Ukrainian Orthodox Church and burial in the Woodlight Cemetery north of Stenen. Born on February 25, 1905 at Shesheniuka, Ukraine, he had no formal education and learned to read and write on his own. After the death of his father, he immigrated along with his mother to Canada in 1910, settling in the Mohyla district northeast of Canora. They later moved to the Stenen area where he farmed and did carpentry work. He also enjoyed photography as a hobby. Predeceased by his parents and two half-brothers, Pete and Metro he is survived by a half-brother, Bill of Burnaby, BC and a half-sister, Mary Tanasiuk of Hudson Bay, SK.
