BUGERA - Mary (nee Bychowsky) Bugera, age 75, died on Saturday in the Canora Union Hospital. Funeral service held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church at Stenen and burial in the Catholic Cemetery, northwest of Stenen. Born in Poland, Mary Bychowsky settled with her parents in the Stenen district in 1907. She married Anton Bugera there in 1917. After her husband’s death, she lived with a daughter until 1969, when she moved to Mikado. Predeceased by her husband in 1961 and a daughter, Mrs. Anne Reagan, she is survived by four sons, Peter and Mike of Stenen, Sam of Mikado and Melvin of The Pas; a daughter, Mrs. Rose Perepeliuk of Dauphin; a brother, Peter Bychowski of Stenen; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

DEMCHYNSKI – Nick Demchynski was born in Antoniwka, Province of Chortkiw, Ukraine, on May 14, 1855, the son of Jacob and Kasie Demchinsky. Nick married Ksanka Zadorocheny and they had two children, Marten and Annie. Ksanka died when Annie was two years old. Nick remarried to Tillie Shortyk, and shortly afterwards they came to Canada in 1902, with three children, Marten, Annie and Mary. They settled on a farm 12 miles north of Canora. Nick was a chiropractor and helped not only people in the neighborhood, but also animals when necessary. They had four children born in Canada, Peter in 1903, Irene in 1906, Mike in 1909 (died in infancy) and Sophie in 1912. In 1936, they bought one acre of land in Stenen. He lived in Stenen until his death in 1943 at the age of 88,

PARASIUK – Nickoli Parasiuk was born in 1870 in the village of Swidowa, County of Czortkow in Ukraine. He married Yawdokia Marinovich (born in the same village in Ukraine in 1874) They immigrated to Canada in 1903 with their three children, Ksenka born in 1896, Laddie born in 1899 and Mary born in 1903 and Yawdokia’s parents, Michael and Hafia (Rudachuk) Marinovich. They homesteaded 3 miles north of Stenen, where they farmed for many years. They had seven children born in Canada, Paul, Annie born in 1908, Peter born in 1911, died at the age of three, Myrtle born in 1913, Harry 1915, Victoria 1917 and Joseph born in 1922, died at the age of seven. Nick was one of the first organizers of the Ukrainian Church and the first services were held at his home before the church was built. Nick passed away in 1959

ROMANOW – Wasyl Romanow, age 79, died in the Canora Hospital in 1967. Born in Western Ukraine in 1888, he came to Canada in April 1902, with his parents, who homesteaded south of Tadmore. He married Anastasia Yuswak at Canora in 1913 and they took up farming thirteen miles north of Stenen. They were blessed with five children. He retired from farming in 1960, but continued to live on the farm. Predeceased by a son, Steve in 1919, he is survived by his wife; son Laddie of Stenen; three daughters, Sophie Romaniuk of Vancouver, Marie Romanow of Yorkton and Stella Gromniski of Hyas; two sisters, Anne Blaz and Mary Shushelnitski of Canora; three grandchildren.

SLAPINSKY – Frank Slapinsky was born June 15, 1894 in Sedowa, Barszczow, Galicia Poland. He came to Canada with his parents in 1907 and they settled in the Stenen district. He attended school for a few years, learning the English language so that he could go out and look for a job. He married Mary Parasiuk on November 14, 1920 at St. Peter and Paul Church in Canora. After various moves, they settled north of Stenen in the Goodhue School district. They had three children, a son Tom and twin girls, Nellie and Anne. They retired from farming and moved into Stenen, where Frank was the village blacksmith for many years. He served as a school trustee in the Goodhue school district and was active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Frank passed away in1972.

SLAPINSKI – Mary (nee Parasiuk) Slapinski, 90, of Stenen, died on October 18, 1993 at the Canora Union Hospital. Funeral service held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Stenen. Born on January 14, 1903 to Nick and Adonia (Maranovich) Parasiuk in Austria, she came to Canada in 1904 when her parents settled in the Stenen district. On November 14, 1920, she married Frank Slapinski in Canora. They farmed in the Stenen district until 1945 when they retired and moved to Stenen. She continued to live in Stenen after her husband died in 1972. She was a member of the Do Drop In Centre in Stenen, a member of t. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s Club. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, two daughters, Ann Zaharychuk and Pauline in infancy, a grandchild in infancy, five brothers, Laddy, Paul, Harry, Joe and Pete and two sisters, Ksenka Gorgitza and Vicky Modeski; she is survived by a son, Tom (Eva) of Stenen; a daughter, Nellie Surcon of Preeceville; two sisters, Annie Gogal of Bowsman and Myrtle Joisthal of Dauphin; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

SLAPINSKI – Pauline Slapinski, the daughter of Mary and Frank Slapinski of Stenen, died in 1921.
