AMUNDSON – Oscar Melvin Amundson was born May 4, 1902 in the United States to parents Andrew and Christina Amundson. He came with his parents and siblings, Algot, Axel, Annie and Edwin to Canada in 1905 and they settled in the Stenen area. A brother, Hilmer was born in Canada. Oscar passed away May 15, 1921.

ANAKA – Donna Anaka was born in 1959 the daughter of Harry and Pauline Anaka. She developed brain cancer and passed away at the age of five on June 18, 1965.

ANAKA – Elsie Anaka of Yorkton an formally of Regina and Stenen, age 82 years, died on May 3, 2007 in the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Funeral service was held in the Stenen community hall. She was born on September 20, 1924, in Melville to John and Kathleen Stewart. She completed a grade nine education and became well read and achieved the rest of her education through her work experience and her travels. Elsie met the ‘love of her life’ a pilot in training, Peter John Anaka, while working in Regina at an ammunition factory. She would move to Winnipeg, where Peter would find her upon his return from the war. They were married March 24, 1945 in Winnipeg and returned to live on the Anaka farm at Stenen for a year. They had one son, William. Elsie and Peter Anaka’s story is well illustrated in ‘The 100th Airman’. Elsie listed the book under the heading of significant accomplishments in my life, the other was her son W. R. (known as Bud to almost everyone) Elsie was willing adaptable and had a strong people oriented personality. Throughout her life time Elsie was the manager of a Regina Jewelry Store, worked with an income tax firm, Town councilor for the town of Stenen for seven years, member of the UCW, local newspaper correspondent. Her travels found her in Ottawa, PEI, Houston, Texas and Mexico. Following her husband’s death, Elsie returned to Regina where she lived for 10 years. She often referred to her friends there as ‘the Schemer Bay' era. Elsie accumulated good friends from all corners of her life in several provinces. Elsie’s remembrance book also declares Elsie Anaka to have been ‘and will to the end of my time on earth’, be a member of the Melville Museum, The Air Force uniform and other personal mementos of the life of Peter and Elsie Anaka are housed at he Melville Museum. Predeceased by her husband in 1994, she is survived by her son, William (Hazel) Anaka of Regina; two grandchildren, Brandi of Calgary and Rikki of Prince Albert; brother, Bob Stewart and nieces and nephews.

ANAKA – George Eli was born in 1891 in Galicia. He immigrated to Canada in 1903, with his parents, Elie and Barbra Anaka, and siblings Annie, Francis, Fred, John Wasyl and Metro. A sister, Mary stayed behind in Galicia. George applied for a homestead in the Stenen district on October 19, 1908. He married Katherine Welgush in 1915. From this marriage there were ten children: Peter, Ann, Mary, John, Framon, Helen, Lillian, Mike, Harry and Rosella. George was very active in community affairs and served on the Goodhue School district board for 20 years. He also helped to organize the Wheat Pool in Stenen, the Credit Union and the United Grain Growers. In 1947, George and Katherine retired from farming and moved to Stenen. George passed away on October 5, 1965

ANAKA – Harry Ernest Anaka, 66 of Stenen, passed away on April 11, 1992 in the Canora Union Hospital. Funeral services held in Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on April 8, 1926 in the Stenen district, he was the son of George and Katherine (Welgush) Anaka. He received his education and then worked in logging camps throughout Ontario and Saskatchewan before returning to farm in 1947. On September 3, 1953, he married Pauline Horhut at Sturgis. He continued to farm until he became unable to as a result of his illness this past year. Involved in public life, he served on many boards and committees including: Goodhue School board 12 years; Stenen Credit Union board 7 years; Sturgis School board for 24 years; reeve in the RM of Clayton 6 years; Canora Union Hospital board 4 years; six years with the Yorkton-Melville Health Region; Sask. Farmers Union 17 years and Fort Pelly Livingstone Home Care Board 8 years. He did a survey for 91 clients for the board of Mackenzie Training Centre for the handicapped and served on the board for nine years. Predeceased by his mother in 1957; his father in 1964; a daughter, Donna in 1964 a brother Peter in 1969; and three sisters, Ann Csorda in 1971, Rosella Ray in 1987 and Helen Krushenske in 1991, he is survived by his wife, Pauline; a son, Scott of Macklin; four daughters, Karen (Walter) Rose of Sturgis, Elaine (Robert) Klassen of Edmonton, Nicole of Port Moody, BC and Tammy of Preeceville; three brothers, John of Seattle, Wash., Framon of Victoria and Mike (Justine) of Creighton; two sisters, Mary Deitcher of Vancouver and Lillian (Art) Lawson of Brantford, ON and three grandchildren.

ANAKA - Katherine (Wasilke) Anaka (nee Welgush) was born in Galway in 1898 and immigrated with her parents to Canada in 1900. She married George E. Anaka in 1915 and they farmed in the Stenen area, until retiring to the Village of Stenen in 1947. They raised five sons, Peter, John, Framon, Mike and Harry and five daughters, Ann, Mary, Helen Lillian and Rosella. Katherine passed away in 1957 and is buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

ANAKA – Onufrey Anaka, 82 of the Stenen district, passed away on November 4, 1997 at Canora Hospital. Funeral service held at ST. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Stenen. Bon on Jan. 31, 1915 to John and Zoavie Anaka in the Stenen district, he attended George Albert School and then worked on the family farm. On October 22, 1939, he married Nellie Surcon. They purchased their own farmland in the district. While farming, he operated a sawmill with his brothers-in-law. In 1983, they moved to Stenen, but he continued to farm until the early 1990’s. He was active in the community: a member of the Sask. Wheat Pool board for 48 years (including 30 years as chairman); was a school board trustee for George Albert School; board member of Stenen Credit Union; member of St. Demetrius Orthodox Church (chairman 1963-1983 and vice chair since) and he sang in the church choir. Predeceased by his parents, a son Robert, four brothers, Harry, Mike, Peter and William and two sisters, Mary Diachina and Ann Brunt, he is survived by his wife, Nellie; a son, Gerald (Janet) of The Pas; a daughter, Faye (Carl) Biletski of Canora; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren

ANAKA – Peter E. Anaka, 55 of Stenen, passed away October 30, 1969. Funeral service was held in the Stenen Community Hall, with Rev. McIntyre officiating. Peter was the eldest son the late George and Katryna Anaka. He was born and raised in the Stenen area and attended Goodhue School. His main interests were trapping and hunting, although he had been crippled for several years. All his life he resided on the family farm. He is survived by four sisters in Ontario and one in BC; four brothers in Victoria, Seattle, Flin Flon, and one at Stenen.

ANAKA – Peter John Anaka, 71, of Stenen, passed away on April 25, 1994 at his home. Funeral held at the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home. Born on March7, 1923 in Stenen, he received his education in the village. He was a captain in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later worked as a station agent for the CNR and as an excise customs officer. He married Elsie Stewart at the United Church manse in Winnipeg on March 24, 1945. He was a member of the Preeceville branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Predeceased by two brothers, Mike and Harry, and two sisters, Mary and Ann, he is survived by his wife, Elsie; a son, William Roy (Bud) of Rouleau, SK; two brothers, Onufrey of Stenen and William of Canora; and two grandchildren.

ANAKA – Scott Jason Anaka, aged 20 of Sturgis, passed away on May 19, 1992 as the result of a motor vehicle accident near Provost, AB. Funeral was held in Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on August 4, 1971 at Canora, he was the son of Harry and Pauline (Horhut) Anaka. He attended Stenen and Sturgis schools. After graduating from the Sturgis Composite School in 1989, he worked as a tire man at Western Bulk Transport at Edmonton for five months, before returning to Stenen where he helped farm and also logged north of Endeavour in the winter. He worked at the Super Store as a shipper-receiver and as a security guard at the Midtown Mall in Saskatoon, for one year. For the past one and one half years he worked at Silverspoon Oil Field Services at Provost, AB. He played baseball and volleyball. Predeceased by his father in 1992 and a sister, Donna in 1964, he is survived by his mother, Pauline; four sisters, Karen (Walter) Rose of Sturgis, Elaine (Robert) Klassen of Edmonton, Nicole Anaka of Port Moody, BC and Tammy Anaka of Preeceville.

ANAKA – William J. Anaka, 91 of Canora, passed away on August 27, 1996 at the Yorkton Hospital. Born on July 2, 1905 on the family farm north of Stenen to John and Zoavie Anaka. He attended school at George Albert School, north of Stenen. He worked as a diamond driller in mining in the Flin Flon district and also died fieldwork for mines being surveyed. He was the fire Marshall at the fire tower at Isquasum Lake for 25 years. Later he looked after the campsites at Isquasum Lake. In 1993, he moved to Canora. Predeceased by his parents, three brothers, Harry, Mike and Peter and two sisters, Mary Diachina and Ann Brunt, he is survived by a brother Onufrey (Nellie) Anaka of Stenen.

ANDRUSKO - Mary Andrusko, 82, passed away on April 5, 1978. Funeral service held in ST. Demetrious Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Stenen. Mary Anaka was born in Western Ukraine in 1897 and came to Canada with her parents, who settled in the Stenen district in 1902. She married Manoly (Mike) Andrusko there in 1917 and they farmed north of Stenen, retiring in 1959 and moving to Stenen. After the death of her husband, she resided with her daughter, Elsie Surcon and in 1977 moved to the Gateway Lodge at Canora. Predeceased by her husband in 1976, a son William in infancy in 1918 and a daughter Anne in 1927, she is survived by two sons, John Andrews of Little Current, ON and Bill Andrusko of Stenen; a daughter, Elsie Surcon of Stenen; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

ANDRUSKO – Mike William Andrusko, 81 of Stenen, died on July 2, 1976 in the Preeceville Hospital. Born in Bridok, Ukraine, he came to Canada in 1910. While working in a coal mine in Hillcrest, AB, he was one of 30 survivors of an accident in which 204 were killed. Later he homesteaded in the Stenen district where he married Mary Anaka in 1917 and they farmed there until moving to Stenen in 1959. Predeceased by two sisters in the Ukraine, a brother at Hillcrest, AB in 1914, a son William and a daughter, Anne and two grandsons, he is survived by his wife; a daughter, Elsie Surcon of Stenen, two sons, John of Ontario and William of Stenen’ eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ANDRUSKO – Shaun Michael Andrusko of Stenen, was born in 1966, to parents Bill and Sonia Andrusko. At the age of 14 months, he was accidentally drowned at McBride Lake on July 16, 1967.

ANDRUSKO – Sonia (nee Frederickson) Andrusko, beloved wife of Bill Andrusko of Stenen, passed away on June 16, 2015 at the age of 72 years. The youngest of eight children of Martin and Lucinda (Williams) Frederickson, Sonia was born in Canora, on January 19, 1948. Sonia grew up on the Frederickson farm north of Stenen. She proudly remembered the sacrifices of her parents, and of her father who served Canada in both World Wars. She treasured the times with her brothers and sisters, even when they scattered afar. Like many prairie women, she drew from the cycle of nature, and particularly came to love animals and the prairie farmlands. Those wide prairie lands meant a 3-mile trek to the one-room George Albert school. Her favorite horse, Kentucky, faithfully took her to school and back through all weather conditions. Sonia attended high school in Sturgis, followed by a move to The Pas, Manitoba where she worked as a nurse assistant at the hospital. It wasn’t long before she returned to Stenen for her marriage to Bill Andrusko on July 28th, 1961. It was a day she always looked back on as beautiful and joyous. In her 53 years of marriage, there was no farm chore that she would not tackle alongside Bill. She was a devoted mother to five children, Cheryl, Shaun, Lanie, Theresa, and Michael. Bill, her children, and her grandchildren, were the greatest light and loves of her life. She loved God, she loved people, and she loved serving both. She passionately supported school and church communities where she spent much of her life serving faithfully. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments in music and sports. No distance was too far to travel in order to accompany her children to festivals, competitions, tournaments or concerts. She deeply treasured her friendships and the many gatherings around the dining room table. Sonia lived life to the fullest. She was a light to all, and it showed in her eyes and her smile. She loved, gave laughter, and made the world a better place. Sonia is predeceased by her son Shaun, and her brothers, Alfred and Ernest. She is lovingly cherished by her husband, Bill; her children, Cheryl (Jim), Lanie, Theresa (Vince), and Michael; her grandchildren, Kira, Kobi, Siena and Alicia, and many nieces, nephews and relatives. Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 2:00 pm from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora with Pastor Lloyd Teetaert officiating. Interment followed in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

ARIE – David Lee Arie was born in 1931, the son of Thomas and Grace Arie. He later resided and worked in the Edmonton area. On June 8, 1969 he was killed in a highway vehicle accident near Vegreville, AB. He was buried next to his parents in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

ARIE – Grace Eva Arie was born in the States in June1897. She came to Canada with her parents, Horace and Anna Rouse, in 1902 and homesteaded in the Stenen district. She married Thomas Arie in 1914 and together they raised four children: Edith, Norman, David and Gordon. Grace passed away in 1942.

ARIE – Thomas Weslely Arie was born in Illinois in 1889. In 1910 he became a sheepherder, in Montana. In 1912 he came to Canada and married Grace Rouse in 1914. They moved back to the States, but returned to Canada in 1917 and homesteaded on land north of Stenen. Thomas passed away Sept. 23, 1969 in Canora Hospital. Funeral service conducted by the United Church minister, Earl McIntyre.

ARNSTON – Anton Edward Arnston was born August 3, 1860 and as a young man immigrated to the United States, from Leisje, in the Trondheim area of Norway in 1880. He worked in logging in the state of Washington and bricklaying in Jamestown, North Dakota and then settled in Minnesota. It was here that he met Annie Rya, a widow with a seven-year-old son, Hans Albert. They were married in 1893. In 1904, Anton, Anna and their children, Hans, Elise, Anna and Elmer came to Canada and settled about five miles east and south of Stenen. Another son was born in 1906, named Alfred. Anton passed away in 1938 and was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

ARNSTON – Elmer Arnston was born in 1901 in the United States. He came to Canada with his parents, Anton and Annie Arnston and siblings Elise and Anna and half brother Hans Albert in 1904. Elmer remained a bachelor and was the farmer in the family. While staying with his nephew in Toronto he died tragically in 1945 at the age of 42. He was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

ARNSTON – Hans Albert Arnston was born October 24, 1882. His mother was Anna Margaruite Rya (or spelled Ryor) and his father died when Hans was young. When he was about seven years old, his mother married Anton E. Arnston. He came with his family from Minnesota to Canada in 1904, where they took a homestead in the Stenen district. Hans suffered from tuberculosis and died at May 17, 1906.

BAILEY – Ada Mary Bailey 86 of Winnipeg and formerly of Stenen, passed away February 20, 1998 at Holiday Haven Nursing Home. A graveside service was held at the Stenen Community Cemetery on Feb. 24th. Born on February 28, 1912, in Saltcoats, she married Victor Bailey in 1933 and they homesteaded near Mistatim. They later settled in Stenen. A member of the Eastern Star, UCW, Homemakers Guild and a 4-H club leader, she moved to Winnipeg in 1972 Predeceased by her husband, Wallace Victor in 1969, she is survived two sons, Wallace (Dianna) and Allen (Gail) both of Winnipeg; five daughters, Mae McCarthy of Murillo, ON. Donna (George) Wiebe and Gail (Jesse) Rundle both of Winnipeg, Lynn (Donald) Schweigert of Norquay and Bonnie Jenkin of Perth, Australia; a sister, Florence (Ernie) Redenbach of Atlanta; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

BAILEY – Isabella Wyness (nee Davidson) Bailey was born in April 1888 to parents George and Mary Davidson in Scotland. The family immigrated to Canada in 1906 and settled in Manitoba, north of Dauphin. Her siblings were George, Alexander, James and Robert. On March 12, 1908, she married Robert Wallace Bailey in Dauphin, MN. They moved to Roberts homestead, north of Stenen. Their children were Robert George, Wallace Victor, Donald Clifford, Maxwell Alexander and Georgina Isabella. Robert and Isabella moved into Stenen, where they had a car and farm machinery business. Isabella passed away in 1960 and is buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

BALL - Leonard Ball, 93 of Sturgis and formerly of the Stenen district, passed away peacefully at the Canora Gateway Lodge on March 27, 2013. Leonard was born to Harry and Lucy (Watson) Ball on December 19, 1919 on the family farm near Stenen. He was the youngest of 5 children and at the young age of 4, both his parents had passed away. His eldest sister, Annie (Ball) Tanton and Frank Tanton took Leonard in at that time and raised him as their own. In 1941, Leonard joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He met the love of his life, Isabelle (Washburn) and became engaged just prior to Leonard being deployed overseas. He served in Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Holland until V-day. He returned home in Oct 1945. Leonard and Isabelle were married on Jan 8, 1946. They later adopted their only son, Randy Wayne, who was approximately 5 years old at the time. Leonard farmed for 35 years before retiring in Sturgis. Leonard loved all sports, especially baseball, football and curling. He also loved to get together with neighbors to have a game of cards, play the board game aggravation or just sit and visit. Family was a very important aspect of his life and he would light up when family or friends would come to visit. Leonard and Isabelle became resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge in 2008. Leonard was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion as well as a member of the Stenen Senior Citizen Dew Drop in Centre. Leonard is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Lucy; his sisters, Annie (Tanton) and Elsie Chase; his brothers George and Fred Ball and his son, Randy as well as many extended family members. His wife Isabelle survives Leonard. Funeral services were held in Grace United Church in Sturgis and interment in the Stenen community Cemetery.

BALL – Lucy May Ball (nee Watson) was born in England. She married Harry Ball in August 1906. Her first child Annie was born in October 1907 and the following year the family moved to Canada, settling in the Stenen district. Her second daughter, Elsie was born in December 1909 on the family farm. Three more children were born to them, George in Sept. 1915, Fred in 1917 and Leonard born 1919. Lucy died in childbirth on October 18, 1922 at the age of 36.

BALL – Harry Ball was born May 24, 1884 in Horncastle, County of Lincolnshire, England. He married Lucy Watson on August 11, 1906 in the Parish Church at Grimsby County of Lincolnshire, England. They came to Canada, with their daughter Annie, in 1908 and settled on a homestead, ten miles north and two miles east of Stenen. Harry died of the flu on December 20, 1923, at the age of 39.

BARABASH – Joseph Barabash, 72 of Stenen and formerly of Mikado, died on November 21, 1999 at his home. He was born February 5, 1927 in Mikado, he was educated at Stenen. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at Squaw Rapids, Snow Lake, Winnipeg and various places in Sask. He was a welder at Morris Mfg in Yorkton for 25 years. He spent his retirement years hunting, fishing and building model metal toys. He never turned a friend in need down and was always there, ready to help. Predeceased by his father Andrew, and his mother Lena, he is survived by two nephews, James and Brian, both of Winnipeg; a brother, Edward (Iris) of Winnipeg, and three nieces, Sheryl Hart of Abbotsford, Brenda Oates of Crawford Bay, BC and Barb Hart (Gordon) of Mission, BC

BARABASH – Lena (nee Hladabord) Barabash, 91 of Canora, died on April 25, 1995 in the Canora Hospital. She was born on August 28, 1903, to Michael and Josephine (Ochitwa) Hladabord in the Mikado district. She attended Mikado School and then stayed on the family farm, until she married Andrew Barabash in 1926 at Mikado. They lived in Detroit, Michigan for a short period of time and then moved to the Stenen district, where they farmed. They later moved to the Village of Stenen. In 1987, she became a resident of the Gateway Lodge in Canora. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and sewing. She was a member of St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Stenen. Predeceased by her parents; her husband Andre in 1979; a sister Helen Melnychuk and a brother Joe, she is survived by two sons, Joe of Stenen and Ed (Iris) of Winnipeg; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BARABONOFF – David Barabonoff passed away on August 6, 2011. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Denise, daughter Carlene (Trent) and son Justin, also his cherished grandchildren, Jessica and Dylan. A celebration of his life was held at the Stenen Community Hall.

BLACK – Ida May Black of Crystal Lake, passed away on November 7, 1956 at the Canora Hospital after seven months of illness. Funeral service held at the Stenen Community Hall. Ida May Taylor was born October 20, 1880 at St. Thomas, ON. With her parents, she moved to Winnipeg in 1893, where she resided most of her life. She married Edward Scott, a miner who was killed in a mine in BC in 1901. With a small son, Walter, she came to Crystal Lake as a homesteader in 1904. At that time there were few settlers in the area; the nearest railway station was at Canora and Stenen did not exist. Horses, oxen and bicycles provided the only mode of transportation. In 1912, Mrs. Scott married William W. Black. They lived in Winnipeg until 1941 when they came back to Crystal Lake to make their permanent home. She was predeceased by her first husband in 1901, by a son, Walter Scott, who was killed in a railroad accident near Vancouver in 1928, a brother Roy Taylor and a sister Mrs. Evelyn Marples in 1955. Surviving are he husband; three sons, Willis and Leonard of Crystal Lake, Earl of San Leandro, Calif; a daughter Muriel M. Black of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Henley Josie and Mrs. Ella Atkinson of Winnipeg, Mrs. Mabel Guthrie of Estscads Oregon; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BLACK – William Watson Black, 88 of Crystal Lake, passed away June 14, 1969 in Canora Hospital. Born at Arnprior, ON the old son of a family of seven children, he migrated with his parents to the Balmoral, MN district in 1883. In 1903, the family moved to Winnipeg, where Mr. Black engaged in the building contracting business. In 1912 he married Ida Mae Taylor and shortly after the First World War ended he began selling cars at Breen Motors at Winnipeg and acquired a farm north of Winnipeg and began farming. During the early years of his marriage, Mr. Black found time to manage and train several boxers, one of, which was Harry Dillon, who became the light heavyweight champion of Canada in 1929. In 1942, Mr. Black moved his wife and family to Crystal Lake an area his wife had homesteaded in 1904, where he farmed and established a summer resort. He was active in church and community affairs. Predeceased by his wife in 1956, he is survived by three sons, Willis of Crystal Lake, Leonard of Port Albernie, BC and Earl of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter, Muriel of Denver; a sister, Mrs. Grace McMillan of Winnipeg; a brother John of Winnipeg; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BRUNS – Lulu Belle Bruns was born November 1878 in Germany. Her and husband Henry immigrated to the States, where a daughter, Coila was born in 1900. In 1902 they came to Canada and settled in the Stenen district. A son, Lawrence was born in 1903 and a daughter, Thelma in 1905. Lulu passed away on March 30, 1915 at the age of 35 years.

BUGERA – Peter Bugera, 82 of Sturgis and formerly of Stenen, passed away January 26, 2001. Funeral service held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on December 10, 1918 in Stenen, he attended Goodhue School and worked as a farmer and in district logging camps. He married Ann Horodeski on December 18, 1968 at the United Church in Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Mary (Byczkowski) Bugera, a sister Anne Reagan and a half-sister, Jean Halls, he is survived by his wife, Ann; two brothers, Mike (June) and Sam (Luba) both of Canora; a sister, Rose (Mike) Perpeluik of Crystal City, MN and a half-sister, Mary Prekaski of the Canora Gateway Lodge.

BUSCH – Lorne William Busch, 79 of Stenen, passed away January 4, 1998 at the Yorkton Regional Hospital. Funeral service held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on January 11, 1918 in Winnipeg, he was educated in Stenen and attended grade 12 at Luther College in Regina. He worked for Stenen and Busch as a mechanic until joining the army in 1941. He returned from overseas in 1945 and worked for his father at Busch Motors. He later assumed ownership of the business and retired in 1981. He served as councilor and mayor of Stenen for 17 years. A member of the Masonic Order and the Preeceville Legion, he was a board member of the Stenen housing authority. He married Lillian Anaka on August 16, 1940 at the Baptist manse in Yorkton. Predeceased by Adolph and Florence Busch, he is survived by his wife, Lillian; one son, Bob of Winnipeg; two daughters, Maureen of Stenen and Eleanore of Hudson Bay; two sisters, Elenore Perry of Vancouver and Noreen (Owen) Moses of Portland, Ore., and seven grandchildren

BUSCH – Robert ‘Bob’ Busch, 59 of Winnipeg, passed away on July 5, 2002 at St. Boniface Hospital. Funeral service held at Cropo Funeral Chapel and a graveside service was held July 20th at the Stenen Cemetery, with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. He was born on July 25, 1942 to Lorne and Lillian Busch of Stenen. He attended the Stenen School and the Sturgis Composite High School. As a youngster, he loved helping his father and grandfather in the family owned Busch Motors. This early start inspired a lifelong love for automobiles. Bob move to Winnipeg in 1964 where he worked for the Toronto-Dominion Bank and then entered the real estate field until his health forced him to retire in 1996. Bob truly enjoyed the outdoors where his interests included fishing, camping and barbecuing with family and friends. Predeceased by his father in 1998, he is survived by his son Jason (Rhonda); daughter Shelly (Shane); mother Lillian; sisters Maureen Lisoway and Eleanore Prekaski and their families and special friend Cathy.

CHASE – Frederick John Chase, 54 of Stenen, died on September 9, 1969 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral service held in the Stenen Hall with Pastor G. Childerhose of the Pentecostal Church at Preeceville officiating. Mr. Chase was born at Hewitt, Minn., and moved to Canada in 1919 to the Frame Lake district, where he attended school. In 1936 he married Grace Washburn and they farmed in the Ormside district. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Dennis, Linda, Shirley and Ronald; five sisters, Irene, Eunice, Alpha, Mary and Clara and two brothers, Melvin and Paul.

CHEHORSKY – Anne (nee Fedyk) Chehorsky, passed away at the Canora Gateway Lodge on August 19, 2010 at the age of 88 years. Anne was born January 10, 1922 in the Glen Elder district north of Danbury to John and Sophie Fedyk (Yalowecky). She was the third of ten children. She attended Glen Elder School until an early age; she went to work for area neighbors. She was employed as a domestic and farm labourer. Anne Married William Chehorsky on October 24, 1940, at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church north of Stenen. They farmed in the Stenen and Crystal Lake areas until 1976, then moved to Lady Lake where Bill was employed as an elevator agent. In 1980, they retired and moved back to Stenen. Bll and Anne had a family of eleven children. Their extended family included 26 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and 1 great-great-great grandchild. Anne was a member of St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a member of the Women’s Church Club. She was an avid bingo and card player. Her garden were enormous and she spent many hours making sure nothing went to waste. Her passions were hr family, cooking, baking, canning and gardening. In 1984, following the death of her husband, she became a resident of Eden Valley Place and in January of 2007, a resident of Canora Gateway Lodge until her passing. Anne was predeceased by her parents, John and Sophie, her husband Bill, daughters, Wilma and Valerie, grandson Derrick Norsten, brothers, Peter and Paul, and sisters, Nellie, Pauline and a baby in infancy. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughters, sons and their families.

CHEHORSKY – William Chehorsky, 64 of Stenen, passed away May 2, 1984 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral held in St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Stenen. Born on January 6, 1920 at Danbury, he was the son of Metro and Katherine (Dutchak) Chehorsky. He attended George Albert School and on October 24, 1940, he married Anne Fedyk in St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in the Stenen district. He farmed in the Stenen district until 1976, when they moved to Lady Lake, where he was employed as an elevator agent. In the spring of 1980, the couple retired and moved back to Stenen. Chehorsky served in both the army and the air force during the Second World War, from 1941-45. While in the air force, he trained for and became a flight engineer. He was a member of the Sturgis branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Predeceased by his father, Metro and his stepfather, John Metran; he is survived by his wife, Anne; his mother Katherine; two sons, Johnnie and Claude, both of Stenen; nine daughters, Wilma Hayes of Sturgis, Valerie Pickunyk and Corrie Norsten, both of Edmonton, Lu (Wally) Slobozian and Alice (Zenith) Kotyk, both of Amsterdam, Bonnie (Harry) Prekaski of Stenen, Adeline (Gordon) Wingerak of Calgary, Debbie (Tom) Dutchak of Tadmore and Yvonne (Dean) Hearn of Preeceville; a sister, Mary Chemerys of Winnipeg and 22 grandchildren.

CLAYPOOL - Mary Emma (nee McIntyre) Claypool, 84 of Saskatoon and formerly of Stenen, passed away on August 5, 1984 in the Saskatoon Convalescent Home. Funeral was held in the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home. Born on December 1, 1898 at Arden, MB, Mary Emma McIntyre was educated at Frame Lake School, near Stenen. She married Marion Claypool on December 26, 1917 in the Stenen United Church. She was active in the Stenen UCW. Predeceased by her husband on January 14, 1959; a daughter, Elda Love in 1970; son-in-law Jim Love in 1973; a grandson, Ronnie Love in 1973; and a brother, Bill of Sturgis in 1971, she is survived by five sons, Norman of Stenen, Earl of Tisdale, Milton of Port Alberni, Gordon of Mission, BC and Lorne in Switzerland; two daughters, Delores of Saskatoon and Alice of Preeceville; two brothers, Grant McIntyre of Saskatoon an Bob McIntyre of New York; three sisters, Jean Whitlam, Ruth Kramer and Agnes Crosswhite, all of Edmonton; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

CLAYPOOL – Norman Leo Claypool, 54 of Stenen, died December 6, 1986 in Yorkton Hospital. Funeral service held at the Stenen Hall, with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Born on September 19, 1932 at Stenen, he was educated at Stenen School, and joined the Canadian Army in 1950, serving overseas in Korea in 1951-2. He returned to Stenen in 1954, and worked at various jobs within the area and without, including laborer jobs for the CN and United Grain Growers and on construction projects. He worked in places in the East in the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario to British Columbia in the west, but always returned to Stenen between and after those jobs. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Predeceased by his father, Marion in 1959, his mother Mary in 1984, a sister Elda Love in 1970 and a brother, Bob in 1981, he is survived by four brothers, Lorne of Ottawa, Earl of Tisdale, Milton of Port Alberni, BC and Gordon of Maple Ridge, BC; and two sisters, Alice Lyzun of Preeceville and Delores Buchert of Saskatoon

CLAYPOOL – Willis George Claypool, 76 of Sturgis and formerly of Danbury, passed away March 12, 1991 in the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral service was held in Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on June 21, 191 in Stenen, he was educated at Brush Valley School. He farmed in the Danbury district until 1967 and also did water well drilling in the district. From 1967 to 1979, he worked for the Simpson Timber C. at Hudson Bay. In 1979, he retired and moved to Sturgis where he did carpentry work. He was a member of the Sturgis READ Club. On November 10, 1936, he married Peggy Cooke at Canora. Predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Charles and three sisters, Hazel, Florence and Mae, he is survived by his wife, Peggy; four sons, Lloyd of Kayville, Grant of Saskatoon, Garry of Edmonton and Larry of Hudson Bay; four daughters, Margaret of Saskatoon, Donna of California, Sharon of Tennessee and Joy of Nova Scotia; a sister Mabel Washburn of Hudson Bay; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren

CORBETT – Daniel Jamie Corbett age 12, of Stenen, passed away on December 18, 1981 in a car accident, south of Crystal Lake. Funeral service was held in the St. Nickolas Ukrainian Catholic Church at Stenen. Daniel was born November 4, 1969 at Calgary. He attended Stenen School and was a member of the Sturgis School Division intermediate band and he took part in minor baseball. He is survived by his parents, Wayne and Sandra; two brothers, Myles and Joel and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Jungling of Drumheller and Merlin Corbett of Saskatoon.

CORBETT – Viola May Corbett was born November 14, 1891 in Ontario to parents, George and Mary Bellamay. Her siblings were William, Mary E, Amy M., Alexander and George. She married James D. Corbett, a widower with six children: Archie 1901 and James 1902 were born in the States. Rubon 1906, Eva 1907, William 1908 and Sidney 1911 were born in Sask. (James immigrated to Canada from the States in 1905, with his first wife Laura) A daughter, Elhyle was born to Viola and James in 1915. Viola passed away April 9, 1917 and was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

DOROSH – Fred Dorosh was born in1905 in Poland. He came to Canada and settled in the Stenen district. He married Mary Bodnarchuk in 1926 and they moved to a farm in the Danbury area. In 1945, they moved 1 ¼ miles north of Stenen, where they continued to farm. They raised ten children: Ellen, Pearl, Elsie, Mervin, Sylvia, Jim, Fred, Gerald, Geraldine and Dixie. Fred bought machinery from the States, trucking it into the area, for resale. He served as councilor for the RM of Clayton for a few years. Fred passed away on December 13, 1952, in a train-car accident at a crossing between Hyas and Stenen.

DOROSH – Mary Dorosh, 78 of Calgary and formerly of Stenen, died in Calgary General Hospital on November 27, 1987. Funeral service held in the chapel of Oneschuk Funeral Home in Canora. She was born on May 1, 1909 in Venlaw, MB. In about 1918, she moved to a farm in Danbury district and worked there at numerous places doing domestic help. She was united in marriage to Fred Dorosh in 1926. The couple farmed in the Danbury area and later moved to farm in the Stenen district. They had 10 children. After the death of her husband in 1952, she continued to reside on the farm until the fall of 1962 at which time she moved to Stenen. In 1972, she moved to Calgary. Predeceased by her parents, Fred and Ann (Demchuk) Bodnarchuk, her husband, two daughters, Sylvia Coumont, and Elsie in infancy, a son Mervin, three brothers, Nick, John and Harry, and three sisters, Helen, Dora and Nellie, she is survived by: three sons, Fred (Carol) and Gerald of Calgary and James of Winnipeg; daughters, Ellen (Stan) Hall of Nokomis, Pearl (Art) Freeman of Calgary, Geraldine Dorosh of Yorkton

DUTCHAK – Anna Dutchak was born August 16, 1926 and died November 20, 1926. She was the daughter of Helen and Metro Dutchak.

DUTCHAK – Doris Dutchak was born May 2, 1939 to parents Metro and Helen Dutchak and passed away March 30, 1940.

DUTCHAK – Dorothy Helen Dutchak was born on May 17, 1941 to parents Metro and Helen Dutchak and passed away June 24, 1941.

DUTCHAK – Metro Dutchak was born in Kamina, Ukraine in 1896 to Mike and Nellie (nee Surcon) Dutchak. He came to Canada in his late teens and worked at Moose Jaw for a while and then applied for a homestead north of Danbury. He married Helen Boychuk in 1919 at the Greek Orthodox Church north of Stenen. Metro and Helen sold their farm and moved to Stenen in 1945, where they purchased a livery barn and a quarter section of land southwest of the town site. Metro was an avid fan and supporter of baseball as well as curling. Metro passed away February 19, 1961.

DUTCHAK – Mike Dutchak was born February 10, 1921 and died January 2, 1922. He was the son of Helen and Metro Dutchuk.

DUTCHAK – Mike Dutchak was born July 14, 1923 and died December 11, 1923. His parents were Metro and Helen Dutchak.

ELVIN – Alice Ann Elvin was born January 29, 1896 at Yorkshire England to parents Thomas and Emily (Mitchum) Rushworth. She had three brothers, Arthur, Frank and Sam. In 1927, she immigrated to Canada and married Ernest Elvin on July 20, 1927. They resided on her husband’s family homestead, where they raised their only child, Kathleen, who was born in 1932. Alice loved working in her garden and was a member of the Ormside Ladies Aid group for many years. In 1962, they retired from the farm and moved to Stenen. Alice passed away on July 8, 1978.

ELVIN – Ernest William Elvin was born in 1896 in England to parents James W. and Emily (Ball) Elvin. In the summer of 1910, he came with his parents and siblings, Harry and Florence to Canada, where they settled on a homestead in the Ormside district, north of Stenen. Ernest worked at Regina and in the Strasbourg districts as a farm labourer. He enlisted in the Canadian Army during the First World War and served overseas. It was during this time he met Alice Ann Rushworth of Yorkshire, England, who later became his wife. After the war he returned to the Ormside district where he helped on the farm. Alice Rushworth came to Canada and on July 20, 1927 they were married in the Canora United Church. They made their home on the family homestead. They had one daughter, Kathleen. Ernie was active in the community and was secretary-treasurer for the Brush Valley School for 18 years. He was secretary-treasurer for the Royal Canadian Legion (Canora branch) for many years. He also spent many hours in the district doing veterinary work and helping his neighbors. He retired from the farm in 1962 and they moved to Stenen. Ernest passed away December 4, 1977. He was survived by his wife, Alice; daughter Kathleen (Bob) Hamilton; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

EVANOCHKO – Nicholas Evanochko, 57 of Stenen, died on July 6, 1986 in Canora Hospital. He was born at Ituna on June 23, 1929, the son of Stephen and Anna (Doroshenko) Evanochko. He was educated at Churchill School, after which he worked in Ontario for a few years, returning to take over the operation of the family farm. On Nov. 9, 1952 he married Sophie Musey at Glen Elder and they farmed in the Ituna district until 1960, when they moved to the Danbury district. In 1965 they moved to the Stenen district, continuing to farm there until July 1985, when they retired to Stenen. He was a member and elder of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and secretary of the Catholic Men’s Club at Stenen. Predeceased by his parents, and three brothers, Nick in infancy, Alex and John, he is survived by his wife; four sons, Julian of Adelaide, Australia, Larry and Jerry of Stenen and Rob of Elie, MN; two daughters, Christine of Toronto and Geraldine of Hudson Bay; eight brothers, George and Tony of Ituna, Bill of Montreal, Mike and Russell of Winnipeg, Sam of Wynyard, Danny of Simco, ON. and Nestor of Regina; two sisters, Doris Wionzek of Toronto and Mary Mandzuik of Brantford, ON and seven grandchildren.

FREDRICKSON – Ernest William Frederickson, 81 of the Stenen area, passed away on April 24, 2002 at his farm home. Funeral was held at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sturgis. Born on October 16, 1920 in Stenen, he received his education at George Albert School. He farmed in the Stenen area. On June 10, 1956 he married Rose Popowich in Sturgis. He was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness 58 years ago. Predeceased by his parents, Martin and Lucinda Frederickson; and a brother, Alfred, he is survived by his wife Rose; a son, Kevin (Kim) of Gerald, SK; two daughters, Janice (Sheldon) Steele of Sherwood Park, AB and Tracey (Jason) Johnson of Carlyle; a brother, Richard; four sisters, Inga Hamre, Carrie Bork, Lily Rayner and Sonia Andrusko and five grandchildren.

FREDRICKSON – Lucinda ‘Lucy’ Frederickson, 80 of Stenen, died on June 3, 1977 in Norquay Hospital. Funeral service held at the Stenen Community Hall. She was born in Penzance, Cornwall, England on October 22, 1897, to parents Mr. and Mrs. James Williams. She married Martin Frederickson in 1919 and lived on a farm north of Stenen until last fall when she went to live with her children. Predeceased by her husband in 1972, a son Alfred 1928-1961, a son in infancy, a grandson in 1967 and a granddaughter in 1973, she is survived by four daughters, Inga Hamre, Carrie Bork of Hyas, Lily Rayner and Sonia Andrusko of Stenen; two sons, Ernest of Stenen and Richard of Calgary; 37 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

FREDRICKSON – Martin Fredrickson, age 79, died on September 26, 1972 at the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral service at the Stenen Hall and burial in the Stenen Cemetery. Royal Canadian Legion rites were observed at the graveside. Born in Norway he came to the States in 1906 and then to Canada in 1911. In 1919 he married Lucinda Williams in England. A veteran of both world wars, he farmed in the Stenen area. Predeceased by a son in infancy and a son Alfred in 1961, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Ernest of Stenen and Richard of Delta, BC; four daughters, Ingra Hamre of The Pas, Carrie Bork of Hyas, Lily Rayner and Sonia Andrusko, both of Stenen; 36 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

GALLAGHER – Laura Elaine Gallagher age 9, of Stenen, died in a car accident on December 18, 1881 south of Crystal Lake. Funeral service was held in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church at Stenen. Laura was born on December 14, 1972 at Yorkton and attended school in Stenen. She is survived by her parents, Gregory an Sharon Gallagher; one brother, Carmine Pascal; one sister, Denise Jaques; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gallagher of Yorkton

GIFFEN - Frederick Giffen passed away suddenly in the Preeceville Hospital on March 18, 1963 of a heart attack. He was born at Mayfield, Ontario on May 1, 1885. He came to Saskatchewan in 1905, accompanied by his mother, Jane Shipley and they homesteaded north of Stenen. In 1914 he married Karen Johnson in Grand Forks, ND. They moved to a farm east of Sturgis, where they lived until 1920, when they moved eight miles north of Stenen. In 1955 they retired to the town of Sturgis. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Karen, three sons, Oscar of Swan River, Bert of Fort Francis, ON and Aubrey of Sturgis; and two daughters, Dorothy of Bellingham, Wash. and Vida of Lenswood; a sister, Mrs. Walter Barry of Edmonton and sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

GRYBA - Elsie Gryba was born Jan. 18, 1936 and passed away April 7, 1941. She was the daughter of Nick and Sophie Gryba.

GRYBA – Nick J. Gryba, 70 of Stenen, passed away on August 3, 1980 in Norquay Hospital. Born in the Ukraine to John and Mary Gryba, they came to Canada in 1912 and farmed in Mikado, Usherville, Lucky Lake and Amsterdam districts. After his marriage to Sophie Demchinsky in 1930, they moved to Stenen district until 1936. He worked with the CNR from 1941 until his retirement in 1975. During that time, he helped farmers in the district and was a member of ST. Nicholas Greek Catholic Church at Stenen. Predeceased by his mother in 1917, his father in 1941, and a daughter Elsie in 1941, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Steve of Merrit, BC and Mike of Sturgis; a brother Walter of Surrey; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

GRYBA – Sophie Gryba, 79 of Stenen, passed away on February 7, 1992 at Preeceville. Born on July 18, 1912 in the Amsterdam district, she was the daughter of Nick and Tillie (Shortyk) Demchinsky. She attended Gogal School. On July 25, 1930 she married Nick Gryba at Canora. They farmed in the Lucky Lake area for many years, then moved to Canora where they farmed until 1936, when they moved to Stenen to care for her parents. Predeceased by her parents; her husband in 1980; a daughter, Elsie in 1941; a son, Mike in 1984; and two sisters, Ann Sushelnitsky in 1990 and Irene Radchuk in 1985, she is survived by a son, Steve of Vernon, BC; a brother, Peter Demchinsky of Canora; a sister Mary Gryba of Armstrong, BC; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

HALLICK – Arthur David Hallick of Brandon and formerly of Norquay and Stenen, died on July 4, 1970 in the Brandon Hospital. The funeral was held at Stenen. He was born in North Dakota in 1886 to parents, Andrew and Dorthea Hallick. He came to Canada in 1903, taking a homestead in the Stenen district. He married Nettie Simpson at Canora in 1909. He retired to Norquay in 1945. Since 1969 he had been living with his son at Brandon. From 1929 – 1943, he operated the electric power plant at Stenen. He served as a trustee of Liverpool School district for 8 years. Predeceased by his wife in 1969, and a daughter, Mrs. Alice Monaghan in 1938, he is survived by a son, Hillery of Brandon; two sisters, Louise Forester and Clara O’Donell of Bromehead, SK; and three grandchildren.

HALLICK – Nettie Hallick of Norquay, passed away in Canora Hospital in August 1969. Funeral service held at the United Church in Norquay and burial in the Stenen Community Cemetery. She was born in 1888 in Grand Forks County, North Dakota. Nettie Simpson came to Canada to live with her mother near Stenen in 1906. She married Arthur Hallick at Canora in 1909. They farmed near Stenen and retired to Norquay in 1945. A daughter Alice Monaghan predeceased her in 1938. Her husband Arthur; son Hillery of Brandon; sister Lena Thompson of Saskatoon; and three grandchildren survive her.

HANNAH – Ancel J. Hannah of Stenen, passed away October 15, 1983 in the Norquay Union Hospital. Funeral service held in Grace United Church at Sturgis. Born on Aug. 29, 1909 at Young, SK., he was the son of Robert Edward and Mary Hannah. Educated at Young, he was a mechanic for most of his life in various points of Sask., including 13 years at Preeceville. In 1960, he left Preeceville and worked at various summer resorts along the Hanson Lake Road, retiring to Stenen in 1969. He married Adah Nellie Burroughs on July 26, 1934 in St. James Anglican Church at Endeavour. Predeceased by his mother in 1974 and his father in 1956; his is survived by his wife; two daughters, Audrey Krotenko of Stenen and Gail Bjornson of Engen, BC; three sisters, Beatrice Mastre and Ethel Mastre, both of Drayton Valley, AB and Roberta Burroughs of Preeceville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

HANNAH – Adah N. Hannah of Stenen, passed away Aug. 4, 1992 in Canora Hospital. The funeral was held in the Stenen Community Hall, with Pastor Frank Armistead officiating. Born on July 26, 1912 in Melville, she was educated at Melville, Usherville, Winnipeg and Preeceville. On July 26, 1934, she married Ancel Hannah at Endeavour. Their life together began on a homestead in the Usherville area. They lived in many communities including Sturgis, Preeceville and Smeaton. She was first a homemaker, but worked in stores and cafes in various communities and operated summer resorts in the Hanson Lake area, retiring to Stenen in 1969. A member of the Stenen Senior Citizens and a member of the United Church of Canada, she participated in the activities of these groups as well as travelling, gardening, quilting and other forms of handiwork. Predeceased by her husband, Ancel in 1983; her father, Charles Burroughs; her mother Anna Mabel (Robertson) Burroughs; two brothers, Wilfred and Robert Burroughs and a sister, Grace Abra, she is survived by two daughters, Audrey (Harry) Krotenko of Stenen and Gail (Orval) Bjarnson of Westlock, AB; a brother, Donald Burroughs of Creston, BC; a sister, Doris Pinder of Esterhazy; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HARSH – Isaac N. Harsh was born in 1856 in Ohio, USA. He married Mary in 1880 in Minnesota. Widowed, he came to Canada in 1912 from Baker Gove, Kansas, with his children, Alice, Anna, Ralph, Dwight, Mary and Bessie. He farmed in the Stenen district. Isaac passed away in 1938 and was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

HAYES – Wilma Jayne Hayes, of Yorkton and formerly of Stenen, died on Jan 25, 1999 in the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was born Aug. 10, 1941, to William and Anne (Fedyk) Chehorsky on the family farm near Stenen. She received her education in Sturgis, Crystal Lake and Sturgis. On October 10, 1964 she married Jack Hayes in Yorkton. She spent most of her employment within the banking industry. Predeceased by her grandparents and her father William, she is survived by her twin sons, Clayton and Clifford; two brothers, Jonah and Claude Chehorsky; eight sisters, Valerie Forsen, Corrie Norsten, Lu (Wally) Slobozian, Alice Kotyk, Bonnie (Harry) Prekaski, Adeline Wingerak, Debb (Tom) Dutchak and Yvonne Hearn and six grandchildren.

HORODESKI – Adam Horodeski 78 of Stenen, passed away January 27, 1996 at Preeceville Hospital Funeral service was held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on December 24, 1917 in Moose Jaw, he was educated at Sidewood, SK. He farmed north of Stenen and worked for the Pas Lumber Co. in Sask. and BC. He moved back to Saskatchewan in the early 1970’s and worked for Kirsh Construction until he retired. Predeceased by his parents, one sister and one brother, he is survived by a brother, John Smith and a sister, Anna (Pete) Bugera, both of Sturgis.

KOWALCHUK – Anne (nee Steranko) Kowalchuk was born to Stephan and Martha Steranko on February 28, 1918 in Koroleva – Ruska, Poland. Her father, Stephan immigrated to the Stenen district in 1924, followed by Martha and the children in 1929. Within 2 years she was able to attain a grade 8 level and master the English language. Being fluent both in Polish and Ukrainian she was called upon many times to read and interpret letters that were received by people in the are and to prepare responses for them as needed. Anne married William Kowalchuk, raising four children, Pearl, Peter, Eileen and Michael. To her credit and with much determination she ran the farm by herself on two different occasions when William was hospitalized for extended periods. Fifty years ago Anne and her husband retired from the farm and moved into a home in Stenen. She was very active in many areas within the community. This included being secretary for her church, singing in a church choir, teaching Ukrainian classes at a local elementary school as well as being secretary at the Stenen Seniors Centre. She was instrumental in obtaining many grants to assist with the building and development of the Seniors Center in Stenen. Anne was gifted with many artistic talents. She made many quilts, needle point, pictures and rag rugs. In 2002, Anne moved to the Assiniboine Valley Manor in Preeceville. Anne was an active gardener who liked to experience growing different types of Plants. She was particularly fond of roses, and even in her later years in the manor, she found a sunny spot for a rose. Anne is predeceased by her husband William, twin infant children, June Gloria and Maryanne; granddaughter, Terry Lynn, great-grandson, Evan and siblings, Peter, John, Walter, Stephanie, Julia and Mike. Four children, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Irey and Helen Scheschuk survive Anne.

KOWALCHUK – Klem Kowalchuk, 78 of Danbury, died on December 9, 1981 in the Norquay Union Hospital. Funeral service held in the chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home. Burial was in the Stenen Cemetery. He was born in Austria in 1903, the son of Andrew and Paraska Kowalchuk. He came to Canada in 1930, joining his brother, William, who had immigrated earlier to the Stenen district. Later, he moved to Danbury, where he farmed. His parents and six brothers, Ben, John, Emil, Jack, Mike and William predeceased him.

KOWALCHUK – William Kowalchuk, aged 79, died on May 12, 1979 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held in St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Stenen. Born in Austria in 1900, he came to Canada in 1927 to the Stenen area, where he worked as a farm laborer for three years. In 1930, he purchased a farm where he lived until 1963, when he retired and moved to Stenen. Predeceased by a twin daughter in 1950; five brothers in Poland and a granddaughter in 1955, he is survived by his wife, the former Annie Steranko, whom he married at Canora in 1937; two sons, Peter of Stenen and Michael of Regina; two daughters, Pearl Gurski of Stenen and Eileen Garlough of Danbury; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

KROTENKO – Gabriel ‘Harry’ Krotenko passed away in the Preeceville Hospital on September 18, 2013, surrounded by family and a number of caring staff. Harry was born March 16, 1932 to Kost and Paraska (Trofimchuk) Krotenko on the family farm southwest of Stenen. He was the second eldest of the second family for his dad, of 11 children (Nancy, Lena, Ella, Louis, Sam – first family and Joe, Harry, James, Lillian, Elizabeth and Leona the second family) When Harry was young, the family moved to a farm close to Stenen, very near where Harry would spend his life. He attended Stenen School and Sturgis Composite High School, completing grade eleven. He then pursued farming and later carpentry building or remodeling many homes, cabins. misc. in the area for families and friends and community. Harry met and married Audrey Hannah on June 14, 1958. One son, Shawn joined them in 1978. Harry was an ardent sportsman and is well remembered for his hockey, baseball and curling, even tried some golfing and bowling. He was a member of the 1960 Stenen ball team inducted into the SK Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. He was a member of SK Wheat Pool, Dew Drop Inn Centre; an active community volunteer, which also included 11 years as board member for the Stenen Housing Auth. He loved camping, weekend drives and took trips to Vancouver, Toronto, Arizona and California. Harry had a few mini strokes, which weren’t really that noticeable to family or doctors. In 2007 at the age of 74, he had a major stroke that hit his frontal brain. This left him mostly physically fine, but unable to speak. He became a resident of L.T.C. in Preeceville.

LAROCQUE – Jeanne LaRacque of Stenen, died in 1974. Funeral service held at the Stenen Hall. Rev. Ron Jevons of Preeceville, officiated. Born in the Stenen area, Dorothy Jeanne Tanton married Oscar Elie La Racque of Endeavour in 1941. They lived in the Swan River Valley area from 1944 to 1974 and in the summer of 1974 they moved into the village of Stenen. Predeceased by her mother Alice in 1964, her father Stanley Tanton in 1973, a brother Ralph in 1962 and a daughter Dorothy Ann, in 1946, she is survived by her husband; two sons, Oscar James of Calgary and Allan Harvey of Dawson Creek; two daughters, Jeanne Marie and Bernice Alice both of Edmonton; a brother, Merle Tanton of Stenen; and nine grandchildren.

LEE – Allen Thompson Lee was born in October 1909 to parents John Henry and Mildred Lee. Allen passed away April 27, 1920 at the age of ten.

LEE – Ellis Shannon Lee was born July 10, 1919 to parents John Henry and Mildred Lee on the family homestead. He passed away January 5, 1945 and was laid to rest in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

LEE – Donald Henry Lee was born in June 1911 on the family homestead. His parents were John Henry and Mildred Lee. He died March 21, 1920 of a flu virus, at the age of eight. He was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

LEE – John Henry Lee, was the second child born to Nelson and Julia Lee on February 8, 1878. He was born on the farm near Edmond, Wisconsin. He came to Canada in 1905 and took up a homestead in the Stenen area. He married Mildred Thompson March 19, 1907 and they had five children. In February of 1920, John went back to the States to visit family in Nebraska. On his return journey on the train, he picked up a flu bug. Shortly after, the whole family was stricken with the flu. His three eldest sons died. In the fall of 1920, they sold everything, leased the farm and moved to Nebraska to John’s parent’s place. Unable to find employment in the States the family moved back to Saskatchewan in the spring of 1921 and to their homestead. John passed away at his home in Sturgis on October 26, 1951. He was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

LEE - Mildred Lee was born in 1887 in the United States to parents, Thomas and Alice (Howes) Thompson. She had a brother, Allen and a sister Elsie. The family immigrated to Canada in 1905, from North Dakota, to a homestead north of Stenen. She married John Henry Lee on March 19, 1907. They had five children, Allen, Donald, Vernon, Alberta, Ellis and Charles born July 1922. After loosing three sons to a flu virus in 1920, the family moved back to the States in the fall of that year. The following spring they returned to their homestead. Mildred passed away Novemer 14, 1967. Funeral service was held in the Sturgis United Church and burial was in Stenen Community Cemetery.

LEE – Vernon Nelson Lee was born in January 1916 to parents John Henry and Mildred Lee on the family homestead. He died March 19, 1920 at the age of four years old.

LETWINKA - Alexander Letwinka was born July 31, 1888 in the village of Bielawince, Galicia, Ukraine. He landed in Canada on July 4, 1914 and came west and settled at Stenen. In 1923 he married Caroline Ternowsky. Alex had his own business in Stenen, a harness and shoemaker shop. He also worked for the CNR as a section foreman in various communities, including Stenen. They raised five children, all born and raised in Stenen. His wife died on June 24, 1940 at Stenen and shortly after Alex married Wasylena Kurkowsky from Hyas. Alex passed away on Oct 12, 1947.

LETWINKA – Caroline Letwinka was born in Poland in 1901. She came to Canada and settled in the Buchanan district. She married Alexander Letwinka in 1923 and they resided at Stenen. The family consisted of five children: Helen born in 1925, Mike in 1929, Vicki 1930, Al 1932 and Boris in 1937. Caroline passed away on June 24, 1940.

LETWINKA – Mike Letwinka was born in 1929, the son of Alex and Caroline Letwinka. He worked at various jobs in Stenen and the district. He passed away May2, 1967 from infection from 3rd degree burns. He was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

LETWINKA – Victoria Letwinka passed away in the Toronto General Hospital on Nov. 22, 1978 at the age of 47. Burial of the ashes was in the Stenen Cemetery. She was born in the Stenen district to Alexander and Caroline Letwinka in 1930 and moved in 1948 to Toronto where she was employed by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for 30 years. Predeceased by her parents, her brother, Michael; a stepbrother, Michael Kurkowsky and her stepmother, Mrs. T. Senkiw of Stenen, she is survived by two brothers, Al and Boris of Regina; two stepbrothers, Paul of Hyas and Peter Kurkowsky of Stenen; a sister, Mrs. Helen Radford of Toronto; three stepsisters, Mary MacDougall and Ann Cohoon of Toronto and Gloria Zubko of Stenen.

LILL – Alice Ann Lill was born January 3, 1870 in Rouglton Lincolnshire, England to parents George Chapel and Elizabeth (Sleight) Ball. She married George Lill May 23, 1892 in Lincolnshire, England. They immigrated to Canada May 27, 1909, with their three daughters, Agnes, Florence and Ethel. Alice passed away on November 6, 1958 in Swift Current, where her daughter, Ethel lived at the time.

LILL – George Lill was born July 28, 1868 at North Thoresby Lincolnshire, England. His parents were John and Ann Lill. He married Alice Ann Ball in England. They came to Canada in 1909, with their three daughters and homesteaded in the Stenen district. George was a hard working, dedicated farmer. He passed away at home in 1945

LOVE – Elda Jennie Love, age 46 of Preeceville, died at her home in 1970. The funeral service was held from the United Church in Preeceville and burial in the Stenen Community Cemetery. Elda Claypool was born in 1923 at Stenen to parents Marion A. and Mary (nee McIntyre) Claypool. She spent her childhood in Stenen and received her education there. In 1949, she married James Love. Predeceased by her father, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Claypool of Stenen; her husband James; three sons, Ronald, Larry and Brian all of Preeceville; two sisters, Delores Buechert of Saskatoon and Alice Lyzun of Preeceville; six brothers, Bob of Vancouver, Earl of Tisdale, Milton of Port Alberni, Gordon of Mission City, Norman of Stenen and Lorne of Ottawa.

LOVE – Ronald Keith Love, 24 passed away in May 1972 and was buried in the family cemetery plot at Stenen. He was born at Stenen and moved with his parents, Jim and Elda Love to Preeceville about 1950. He attended the Preeceville School and was a member of the air cadet’s squadron. After leaving school he went to Ontario, where he worked for two years and later worked in Saskatoon and Edmonton, returning recently to Preeceville. His mother Elda predeceased him in 1970; his father Jim of Regina; two brothers, Larry of Winnipeg and Brian of Saskatoon; and his grandmother, Mary Claypool of Stenen, survive him.

LOVE – James Wesley Love passed away on June 28, 1972 at Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina. He was born on December 1, 1891 at Arden, MN to parents John Wesley and Margaret (nee Murdy) Love. Both his parents were born in Ireland. James came to the Stenen area in 1946, where he married Elda Claypool on September 14, 1949. They moved to Preeceville, where Jim worked part time as town constable. He was caretaker of the Legion hall for many years. Failing health forced him to retire in 1971 and he became a resident of Regina, where he could be near his doctor. Predeceased by his wife in 1970; his son Ronnie; a sister Mabel McMaster of Estevan and a brother Wilmot of Plumas, MN, he is survived by sons, Larry and Brian; two sisters, Clara Rutledge and Ethel Stewart; a brother, Norman of Neepawa.

LOZINSKY – William Lozinsky age 62, a resident of Stenen, was found dead in his car on June 7, 1970. Funeral service was held at the Stenen Hall. He was born February 28, 1907 in Galicia Vil Leserra, Austria. He came to Canada with his parents in 1909 and settled near Good Spirit Lake, where they farmed. He married Eva Chalus of Good Spirit in 1935 and they lived on his father’s farm for 4 years. In 1939 they moved to Stenen and opened up the first jewelry and watch repair shop in the area. He later expanded his store to include radio and television. In 1941 he received his naturalization papers. Predeceased by three children, he is survived by his wife; three daughters, Lila Duff of Preeceville, Mary Anne and Barbara both of Windsor, ON; two sons, Dmetro of Edmonton and Ronald at home; a brother John of Toronto; a sister Mary of Sheho; and one granddaughter.

LUDLOW – Margaret A Ludlow was born in 1853 in Scotland to parents Mary (Morrison) and Joseph Geary. The family immigrated and lived in Ontario. She married Thomas Ludlow in 1874 and they raised six children: Margaret, Thomas, John, Emely, Charles and Girtrude. Margaret and Thomas eventually moved to the Stenen area around 1905 where they farmed.

LUDLOW – Thomas Ludlow was born July 15, 1843 in Ontario to parents Edward and Mary Ann (Stewart) Ludlow. He married Margaret Geary on April 1, 1874 at Guelph, Ontario. In 1901 they were living in Dauphin, MN and farming. They moved to the Stenen district around 1905. Thomas passed away Nov. 30, 1917 and was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

MARSH – Merta D. Marsh (Barker) was born July 10, 1875 in the States. She married John Franklin March. On June 10, 1913, they arrived at Hyas, Sask. from Wisconsin, with their three children, Harry and twins Gerald and Gertie. On June 14, 1913 a fourth child was born, a daughter they named Celestine. After a short stay on a farm northwest of Hyas they moved to a farm south of Stenen, near Crystal Lake. Merta became very ill and passed away on October 21, 1916. Her last request was that the children stay together. She was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

MARTIN – John James was born in Carden, Kenora, Ontario to parents John and Annie (Bennett) Martin in 1878. His siblings were Bella, Ida, Thornton, George, Margaret and Howard. He married Mary Teresa Oneill on January 15, 1907. Their children were Ellis, William, Margaret and Orion. They came from Ontario and lived on a homestead in the Stenen district. John passed away in 1940.

McINTYRE – Ida Rosella McIntyre, passed away on January 24, 1996 at the age of 90 years. She was born on July 23, 1905 at Birch Hills, NWT. She married William Andrew McIntyre at the Pas, Man on January 25, 1927. They farmed 10 miles north of Stenen, in the Danbury district until retiring to Sturgis in 1965. She lived Sturgis until 1988, when she moved to Prince Albert where she had her own apartment until last summer. She is survived by her children: Elsie Vetterli; Richard of Stayton, Or, Bernard of Mill Bay, BC Lorne of Calgary, Margaret Goudie of Kimberley, BC, Dale of Radium hot Springs, BC Darlene Nelson of Nanaimo, Donald of Calgary, Ronald of Westlock AB; two sisters, Amanda O’Connor of Parksville, BC, and Perle Hume of Richmond, BC; 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband William; a grandson Lindsay Vetterli, a granddaughter Rebecca McIntyre, her parents John and Anna Sand, four brothers Hjalmer, Bernard, Sanford and Edwin Sand. A memorial service held on January 27, 1996 at the Sturgis United Church.

McINTYRE –William Andrew McIntyre was born at Arden, MN. He moved to Sask. with his parents in 1909 and attended school at Canora and Goodhue School. During the First World War he served with the 214th Battalion. He began farming in the Ormside district north of Stenen and in 1927, he married Ida Rosella Sands. They retired to Sturgis in 1965, where he continued his life-long interest and participation in community affairs. William passed away July 26, 1971. He is survived by his wife; six sons, Dick, Lorne and Dale of Saskatoon, Ben and Ron of Uranium City and Don of Calgary; three daughters, Elsie Vetterli of Thompson, Margaret Goudie of Regina and Darlene Nelson of Victoria; two brothers, Garnet of Sturgis and Bob of Philadelphia; four sisters, Mary Claypool of Stenen, Jean Whitlam, Agnes Crosswhite and Ruth Kreamer of Edmonton; and 15 grandchildren and on great grandchild.

MILLS – Elizabeth Mills was born in Scotland October 21, 1847 to parents, John and Ann (Black) McEachern. She came to Canada and on September 23, 1868, married John Mills at Beaverton, Ontario. In 1901 they moved to Aberdeen, Manitoba and then to Dauphin. They later came to the Stenen district. Their children were Annie, Will, Sarah, John, Margaret, Neil, Wesley Stephen, Elizabeth Grace and Pearl Ida, born in 1892. Elizabeth passed away December 11, 1919 and was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

MILLS – James Mills was born March 15, 1842 in Ontario to parents Thomas and Sarah Mills. He married Elizabeth McEachern in 1868. They lived in Ontario until moving to Manitoba in 1901 and then to the Stenen district. They raised nine children. John passed away June 26, 1934.

MOORE – George Moore was born in England in 1888. His parents were William Sr. and Mary Anne Moore. George immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings, William Jr., Percy, Edward and a sister Ada in May 1905. Two of his brothers, Dave and Herb immigrated to Canada in 1903 and two more brothers; Alf and Ernie came in 1904, where they all took homesteads in the Norquay area.

MOORE – Percy Moore was born in 1896 in England, the third youngest son of William Sr. and Mary Anne Moore. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1905 and lived on a homestead in the Norquay district. He married Evangeline Blehm and their marriage was blessed with two children. Helen born in 1930 and Arthur in 1931. In the fall of 1932, during harvest time, Percy was accidentally killed in a tractor accident, leaving behind his 21-year-old wife and two young children.

MOORE – William Sr. Moore was born in England in 1848. In May 1905, William and Mary Anne came to Canada with their children, William Jr., George, Percy, Edward and a daughter Mary. Two of their sons, Dave and Herb had arrived in 1903, followed by two more sons in 1904. They homesteaded in the Stenen/Danbury district. In 1907, William established a post office and named it Danbury Post Office. He was paid $60/year for this service. He ran the post office until 1921 and also continued farming. William passed away in 1934.

MORGAN – Elsie Amanda Morgan, passed away October 9, 1978 at Winnipeg. Funeral service was held in the Stenen Hall, with Rev. Ron Jevons officiating. Born in 1894 in rural Minnesota, to parents who had left their native Norway to seek a better life in North America, she moved with them at the age of ten to Canada and settled in the Stenen area. She married Francis William Morgan in 1917. She was active in church and women’s associations, while she lived at Stenen. Lately she had lived at Winnipeg with her daughter. Predeceased by her husband in 1969, and two brothers, Hans and Elmer, she is survived by three daughters, Evelyn Stennes of Saskatoon and Lula and Mae of Winnipeg; four sons, Ken of Winnipeg, Lorne of Calgary and Don and Robert of Vancouver; a sister Mrs. Harry Simes of Stenen; a brother Alfred Arnston of Los Angeles; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

MORGAN – Francis William Morgan, 77 passed away on March 15, 1969 at New Westminister, after a long illness. Funeral was held in the Stenen Hall. Born on the banks of the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, Louisiana in October 1891, to parents A.E and Lula Morgan, he immigrated to Canada in 1911 and settled on a homestead north of Stenen. Most of his life was spent farming in that area. In 1917, he married Elise Arntson. During the Second World War he served in the armed forces from 1939 – 1945. Later he conducted an insurance business in the Stenen and Hyas districts and was active in community and church affairs. Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Lorne and Donald of North Surrey, BC, Robert of North Vancouver and Kenneth of Winnipeg; three daughters, Evelyn Stennes of Saskatoon, Lulu a missionary in Swaziland, Africa, and Mae of Winnipeg; a sister, Anna Stenen in California; a brother, Allen in Louisiana; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MORRIS – Charles Henry Morris was born in 1843 in England. His third born son, Joseph immigrated to Canada in 1904 eventually settling in Neepawa, MB. Charles wife Mariam, died and in 1906, Charles came to Canada and lived with his son. In 1909, the whole family moved to a homestead in the Danbury district. Charles lived on his own homestead, which was a half-mile from his son’s place. Charles lost his right arm in a chaff machine. He loved music, and played the harmonica. He enjoyed gardening and reading the Bible. He later went to live with his son Joseph and daughter-in-law Lilly. He suffered a stroke in 1921 and was cared for by Lilly until his death in 1922.

ONSTRUND – Hans J. Onstrund was born in Norway. He immigrated to Canada in 1903. He lived in the Stenen district with his wife Betsie, and children Josephine and Ida. A daughter, Agnes was married to a Hallick. Hans died on June 5, 1946 and was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

PASHKO – Nick Pashko of Stenen, passed away on January 28 1982, in the Canora Hospital. Funeral held in St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Stenen and burial in the Stenen Community Cemetery. Born in the Ukraine, he came to Canada at the age of 18 years, going first to Alberta and later to Blaine Lake, SK. He worked for a time at various points including Flin Flon, Island Falls and in Ontario. In 1932, he moved to the Stenen district, where he worked as a laborer and was a carpenter by trade. He lived with the Hunko family from 1942 to 1972 and then bought a home at Stenen, where he resided until his death. A brother and three sisters, all in the Ukraine survive him.

RAHN – Martin Rahn was born in September 1876 in Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1910. He had a homestead 9 ½ miles northeast of Stenen. He and his wife Sophia had a family of eight children. Mike, Joe, John, Henry, Albert, Anne, Pearl and Julie. In 1951, they sold their land, had an auction sale and retired to Stenen. Martin passed away in 1961.

RAHN – Anne Rahn 86, of the Gateway Lodge in Canora and formerly of Stenen, died on April 1, 2003. Funeral service held at the Stenen community hall. Born on February 1, 1917 in Usherville to Eva and Nikifor Halchuk, she was educated at Usherville School. She married Mike Rahn on October 7, 1943 at ST. Andrew’s United Church in Canora. She worked at the hotel and the post office in Endeavour. Predeceased by her parents, her husband Mike, four brothers, Fred, Mike, Nick and George, and four sisters, Mary, Catherine, Katie and Victoria, she is survived by one son, Andrew of Norquay; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

RAHN – Michael Rahn of Stenen, passed away April 10, 1990 in the Canora Hospital. He was born February 27, 1911 on the family farm north of Stenen. He was educated at Ormsby School, north of Stenen. At the age of 16, he was employed in dairy work at Portage La Prairie and later with the railway in the same area. He also worked a s a farm labourer in Manitoba and in 1938 returned to Sask. to farm and operated a sawmill. In 1940, he began farming on his own and retired in 1975. He married Anne Halchuk on October 7, 1943 in Canora. His involvement in the community included: being chairman of the school board, two years on the Village of Stenen council, president of the Senior Citizens Club and memberships in farm organizations and the United Church. Predeceased by his parents, Sophia and Martin and a sister, Mary, he is survived by his wife, Anne; a son, Andy (Rose) of Danbury; four brothers, Joe of Birch River, MB, Henry (Donna) of Cranbrook, BC, John (Evelyn) of Preeceville and Albert (Alice) of Comox, BC; three sisters, Anne Stelmach of Winnipeg, Pearl Whitton of Winnipeg and Julia (Ben) Giroux of Winnipeg; and two grandchildren.

RAHN – Sophia (nee Berbnich) Rahn was born in 1890 in Austria. She married Martin Rahn and they raised five sons, Mike of Stenen, Joe of Birchriver, John of Preeceville, Henry of Courtney, BC and Albert of Comox, BC and three daughters, Anne, Pearl and Julie, who all married and lived in Winnipeg. The children attended Ormsby School. In 1951 they retired to Stenen. Sophia passed away Sept 27, 1967 of a heart attack. The funeral service was held in the Stenen Hall.

RAYNER – Lily M Mabel Rayner was born November 17, 1885 to parents Thomas and Fanny (Palmer) Knight, in Dorset, England. She immigrated to Canada in 1910 She married Silas Rayner on December 26, 1912. Two children were born in Indian Head. Matilda Amy died in infancy in 1913 and William Silas born in 1915. The family moved to the Stenen area in 1916, where four more children were born: Violet Fanny in 1918, Alfred Norman in 1920, Olive Margaret 1924 and Merrill Tremaine in 1927. Lily passed away April 25, 1961, and was buried in the Stenen Cemetery.

RAYNER – Silas Alexander Rayner was born April 24, 1878 at Travellers-Rest, PEI. His parents were William Alexander and Ann Amy (Cannon) Rayner. He moved to Indian Head and married Lily M. Knight on December 26, 1912. They had two children, while living there, Matilda Amy born in 1913 and died December14, 1913. She was buried at Indian Head. A son, William Silas born in 1915. In 1916, they left Indian Head and moved to a farm north of Stenen. The farm had 13 acres broken and Silas cleared the rest by hand. Four more children were born on this homestead. Silas died December 14, 1954 due to cancer.

RONGVE – Alice Lee Rongve was born in 1875, the daughter of Nels and Julie Peterson Lee. She married Thomas Rongve in 1903 at Linden, Wisconsin. Her husband came to Canada in March 1905 and filed on a homestead. Alice and her son, Willard Lee, joined her husband that summer. Thomas had built them a two-storey log house, with a shingled roof. Five more children were born in Saskatchewan, Gladys Laverna, Helen Adeline, Lois Marie, Ina Clarissa and Gordon Thomas. Alice passed away in 1939.

RONGVE – Jessie Irene Rongve, 81 of Sturgis, died on April 15, 1992 at Saskatoon. Funeral service held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on November 14, 1909 in Minneapolis, Minn., she was educated at Hyas and Canora Schools. She received her teacher’s training at Moose Jaw Normal School. She taught in the Sturgis area. In 1931, she married Willard Lee Rongve at Yorkton. She was a member of the United church Women, the Sturgis Read Club and the Superannuated Teachers of Sask. Predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Janet Sewell; her husband in 1955; two brothers, Floyd and Herbert Jr. and a sister Eleanor Backland, she is survived by three sons, Warren (Jean) of Meadow Lake, Wayne (Eleanor) of Edmonton and Karen (Andree) of Saskatoon; two brothers, Lester Sewell of New Westminister, BC and Harry Sewell of Sioux Falls, S.D; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

RONGVE – Willard Lee Rongvy, age 50, popular businessman of Sturgis, met his death by drowning last Saturday evening, August 27, 1955. His car tippled over the edge of the Kopje Creek Bridge near Larson’s farm, a mile north of Sturgis. Driving south Mr. Rongve evidently got on the soft shoulder of the road and before he could get back on the grad his car straddled the west rail of the bridge, tipping top down into about six feet of water. It is believed that the impact which broke almost all the glass in the car rendered Mr. Rongve unconscious and he drowned inside the car. Willard was an agent for Watkins products, an agent for Sask. Government Insurance, President of Sturgis Credit union, a member of the Preeceville Union Hospital board and Sturgis Public School Board. He served six years on the council when Sturgis was a village, and was the Overseer from 1947 to 1951. He is survived by his wife Jessie an three sons, Warren, Wayne and Karen; his father Thomas Rongve; his brothers Gordon and four sisters Gladys Doyle, Helen Bates, Lois Graham and Ina Peters of Winnipeg. Funeral services were held in Grace United Church, with burial in Stenen Cemetery. The large attendance and the numerous floral tributes gave testimony of the great esteem in which the deceased was held in Sturgis and the surrounding community.

SHELDRICK – Mary Ellen Sheldrick was born in England in 1869. She married John Sheldrick in England and they had two children, John born 1892 and Jane in 1894. In 1911, the family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Stenen area on a farm a half mile east of the Village of Stenen. After a lengthy illness she passed away in 1927. She was buried in the Stenen Community Cemetery.

SHIPLEY – Jane Shipley was born July 19, 1867in Ontario to William and Elizabeth Giffen. She worked as a tailor and in October of 1889, she married Archibald Shipley. Widowed, she came with her son, Frederick Giffen in 1905, first to the Sturgis district and then in 1920 moved to the Stenen area, where they took up a homestead and farmed. Jane passed away September 21, 1937.

SIMES – Anna Mathilda Simes of Canora and formerly of Stenen, died on November 24, 1989 in the Canora Union Hospital. Funeral service was held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on Feb 24, 1899 at Montevedio, Minn., the daughter of Anton Arntson and Anna Aasen, she immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1904 and settled in the Stenen district. After she received her education at Stenen, she was employed at the Stenen Bank. On Feb 6, 1921, she married Harry Simes at Preeceville, and they farmed west of Tadmore until 1935, when they took over the operation of her father’s family farm. She was secretary of the United Church Women’s League for many years and was the secretary of the Liverpool School district. In 1986, she became a resident of the Gateway Lodge in Canora and since 1988 she was a patient in the Canora Hospital. Predeceased by her parents; her husband Harry in 1982; her sister Elise Morgan in 1978 and three brothers, Hans Rya in 1906, Elmer Arntson in 1945 and Alfred Arntson in 1981; she is survived by three sons, Allan of Yorkton, Lewis (Anne) of Stenen and Norman (Stella) of Kelowna, BC; one daughter, Margaret (Melvin) Olson of Swift Current; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

SIMES – Harry Lawrence Simes, 93 of Stenen, passed away on August 28, 1982 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral service held in the Stenen Community Hall and burial in the Stenen Community Cemetery. He was born February 13, 1889 at Moorhead, Minn., the son of Lewis and Julia (Lisland) Simes. He received his education at Spring Prairie School, Glyndon, Minn. and immigrated to Canada in 1906, settling in the Crystal Lake area, where he began farming. He married Anna Mathilda Arntson at Preeceville. Following their marriage they moved west of Tadmore, where they continued to farm until 1935, when they moved to the Stenen district. There, they have farmed and resided since. Predeceased by two brothers, Wesley and Arthur and two sisters, Gertie Beaton and Cory Corbett, he is survived by his wife; three sons, Allan of Yorkton, Lewis of Stenen and Norman of Flin Flon; a daughter, Margaret Olson of Swift Current; a sister, Stella Laing of Sturgis; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

SKOREWICH - Caroline Skorewich, 87 of Stenen, died on April 6, 1999 at Yorkton Health Centre. Funeral held at St. Patricks R.C Church in Sturgis. Born June 11, 1911, near Invermay, she attended Dobrowody and Forest Hill Schools. She later married William Skorewich and they lived in Stenen. Predeceased by her parents, Peter and Francis Fullawka, three brothers, Myron, Victor and Mike, two sisters, Anne and Pauline, and a daughter, Sylvia in 1987, she is survived by a son, Orest (Marsha) Skorewich of Saskatoon and two granddaughters.

SKOREWICH – William Skorewich, passed away on April 13, 1979 in Preeceville Hospital at the age of 75. The funeral was held in St. Johns Ukrainian Catholic Church at Tadmore and burial took place at Stenen. He was born in the Canora district on March 15, 1904. He attended Mohela School. In 1942, he married Carol Fullawka at Canora and they lived in the Canora district and then in 1958, moved to Stenen, where he was janitor for the school, rink and community hall. He is survived by his wife; son Orest of Saskatoon; a daughter, Sylvia Fehr; a brother, Tony of Stenen; two sisters, Nellie Moka and Sophie Marlin; and two grandchildren.

SLAPINSKI – Mary (nee Parasiuk) Slapinski, 90 of Stenen, passed away October 18, 1993 at the Canora Hospital. Funeral held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Stenen. Born on January 14, 1903 to Nick and Adonia (Maranovich) Parasiuk in Austria, she came to Canada in 1904 when her parents settled in the Stenen district. On November 14, 1920, she married Frank Slapinski in Canora. They farmed in the Stenen district until 1945 when they retired and moved to Stenen. She continued to live in Stenen after her husband died in 1972. She was a member of the Do Drop In Centre in Stenen, a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s Club. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, two daughters, Ann Zaharychuk and Pauline (in infancy), a grandchild in infancy, five brothers, Laddy, Paul, Harry, Joe and Pete and two sisters, Ksenka Gorgitza and Vicky Modeski, she is survived by a son, Tom (Eva) of Stenen; a daughter, Nellie Surcon of Preeceville; two sisters, Annie Gogal of Bowsman and Myrtle Joisthal of Dauphin; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

SMITH – John Smith of Sturgis, died on April 16, 1996 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at Grace United Church. He was born on May 3, 1922, at Moose Jaw to William and Christina Smith. The family farm was in the Tompkins/Sidewood area near Moose Jaw. He went by horseback to the country school near his parent’s farm. As a youngster he worked on the farm. In about 1935, he came to the district north of Stenen, where homesteads had been found for the family. His brothers, Adam and Joe arrived first. He came with is his sister Annie, and his parents to a neighboring farm. They lived in the same home until his parents died. In 1968, Annie married and another house was moved onto the farm site, but they continued to share meals together and worked co-operatively with Adam and Joe farming. Annie, Peter and John moved to Sturgis in November of 1995. He taught himself to play the fiddle and accordion and played at house parties in the early days. Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his sister, Annie (Peter) Bugera.

STERANKO – Martha Steranko, passed away March 9, 1978 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral service was held in St. Dmytrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Stenen. Born at Lensford, Pennsylvania, she moved in 1904, with her parents to Poland. In 1917, she married Steve Steranko and in 1929, with her children Anne, Pete Laddie, Julia and John she came to Canada to join her husband Steve, who had arrived in 1925. They settled on a farm in the Frame Lake school district. Children Mary, Stephanie, Mike and Helen were born in Canada. Martha and her daughter Julia retired to the village of Stenen in 1963. Predeceased by her husband in 1938 at the age of 48 years; a son, Laddie, age 11, died in 1933 and two daughters, Steffie in 1934 and Julia died in 1972 at the age of 49. She is survived by three sons, Peter and John of Stenen and Mike of Winnipeg; three daughters Ann Kowalchuk of Stenen, Mary Irey of Washington and Helen Scheschuk of Danbury; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

SURCON – Alex Surcon of Stenen, passed away on January 2, 2002 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Funeral held at the Stenen Hall with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Born on January 10, 1928 in Hyas, he attended school there and worked in the private trucking business, was the co-owner of A&S Transport and at bush camps in Ontario. He worked at a bulk service station, an SGI insurance business, as maintenance man for the Village of Stenen and sold aerial photography for a Regina base d company. He married Mae Gogal on June 18, 1950, at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canora and served as a member of village council. He was a member of the Stenen baseball club inducted into the Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame. Predeceased by his parents, Lewonte and Maria, seven brothers, Bill George, Neil, Pete < Mike, Steve and Nick in infancy and two sisters, Katie and Annie, he is survived by his wife Mae; three sons, Colin (Sue) of Stoney Mountain, MB Glenn (Cyndi) of Brandon and Leonard (Erin) of Martensville; a sister, Nellie Anaka of Stenen; and six grandchildren.

SURCON – Mae K Surcon, passed away suddenly on January 4, 2012 at her home in Canora at the age of 81 years. She was born on January 16, 1930, to Patrick and Helen (Fesyk) Gogal on the family farm in the Crystal Lake area, where she was raised. As a young girl, she attended Crystal Lake School and always reminded us just how far the daily walk was, barefoot of coarse. She married Alex Surcon of Stenen on June 18, 1950. She worked at the local lumberyard and painted homes in the Stenen area. She was a Tupperware dealer for years and also worked for Home Care in the surrounding area. Mae enjoyed curling, playing cards, dancing and partying with family and friends. Together they raised three sons, who in turn gave back to the family, six beautiful grandchildren, whom she absolutely lived for. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren an enjoyed every opportunity to see them and spend time with all of them. Shortly after Alex passed away in 2002, Mae sold the family home and moved to a senior complex in Canora. As her health began to decline over the last few years she was will cared for by her sister Phyllis of Canora. She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Helen; her husband Alex; her sister Vivian and her brother Bobby. She is lovingly remembered by her three sons, Colin, Glenn and Leonard (Erin); Her six grandchildren, Lindsay, Adam, Tyler, Morgan, Brodie and Riley; her brother Jim (Carol) and her sisters, Phyllis (Emil), Diana and Eleanor (Jim).

TANTON – Alice W. (nee Harsh) Tanton was born in August of 1892 in Minnesota, USA. She was one of eight children, born to parents Isaac Newton Harsh and Mary Harsh. Her siblings were May, Elsie M., Russell C., Dwight, Lloyd, Frank and Ralph. Her father Isaac widowed and six of his children immigrated to Canada in 1913 and settled on a homestead eleven miles north of Stenen. Alice married Stanley James Tanton in 1918. To this union three children were born, two boys, Ralph and Merle and a daughter Jean. They farmed until 1945, and then lived with their sons. Alice was in poor health for quite some time and passed away in 1954.

TANTON – Carol Roberta Tanton was born in 1946 to parents Robert and Cora Tanton. She died in 1961, with leukemia.

TANTON – Bonnie D. L. was born in 1956 to parents Verna (Newton) and Ralph Tanton. She lived on a farm eleven miles north of Stenen, with her parents and five brothers. She passed away at 17 months in 1957 and was buried in the Stenen community cemetery.

TANTON – Cora Dell Tanton, 56 of Stenen, passed away on December 8, 1981 in the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at the Stenen hall, with Rev. Doreen Smith of Preeceville officiating. Born at Stenen, she was the daughter of Floyd and Hazel (Claypool) Washburn. She received her education at the Ormsby School and spent her early years on the family farm. On February 18, 1946, she married Robert Tanton at Hedley, BC and the couple resided at Stenen. Predeceased by a daughter, Carol in 1961 and her father in 1977; she is survived by her husband; her mother; a son, Floyd of Regina and a daughter, Cheryl Wagar of Sturgis; two brothers; Robert Washburn of Stenen and David Washburn of St. Albert, AB; five sisters, Grace Tanton and Isabelle Ball both of Sturgis, Marcia Batie of Kaleden, BC, Ruth Zubko of Stenen and Lois Arie of Creighton and four grandchildren.

TANTON – Frank Tanton, 88 of Stenen, passed away on January 4, 1976 in the Veteran’s Home at Saskatoon. Funeral service was held in the Stenen Hall. Born in Kent, England, he arrived at Canora in 1910 and in 1911 took a homestead in the Ormside district, north of Stenen. In 1916, he joined the Canadian Army and served overseas in the First World War. In 1924, he married Annie Ball. He moved to Stenen in 1943 and was a Massey Harris dealer and Imperial Oil agent until retiring in 1950. He lived at Stenen and later at Preeceville until going to live at he Veterans Home at Saskatoon about three years ago. He is survived by two sons, Robert and Ronald of Stenen, and a daughter Mrs. Noreen Schneisler of Keremos, BC and 10 grandchildren.

TANTON – James Albert Tanton of Crystal Lake, passed away on December 19, 2008. Jim was born May 15, 1964 in Preeceville to his parents Ron and Vicky Tanton. Jim grew up in Stenen, part of a farming family. He received his formal education taking up to grade 8 in Stenen and then high school in Sturgis. After his school years, Jim had experienced a number of different jobs. He continued to farm on his own until 1999. In 1998 he began working for the pipeline as an equipment operator, working in various places in Alberta and Sask. until 2006. Jim also hobby farmed, raising buffalo until a few years ago. In the last couple of years, Jim worked for the Sask. Indian Institute of Technology as an instructor, training his students to operate heavy equipment such as graders, loaders and backhoes. Jim was known as a good teacher, and was appreciated by his students. He was a member of the Sask. Wildlife Federation, Stenen Fire Dept. and working at the community bingo. Jim played and coached hockey, played ball and golfed, but Jim truly loved hunting and fishing. His father Ron in 1997 and his grandparents predecease him. He is survived by his son Austin, whom he called ‘Little Bear’, his mom Vicky, his brother Stewart (Janine)’ his sisters, Noreen (Terry) Williamson and Lynda (Cal) Statchuk. May his legacy live on through his son Austin, his family and his hunting buddies.

TANTON - Merle Albert Tanton 64, of Sturgis and formerly of the Stenen district, died on March 1, 1988 in Preeceville hospital. Funeral was held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on June 23, 1923, on a farm north of Stenen, he attended Ormsby School, which was ten miles north of Stenen. He then farmed in the district, and also operated a sawmill. On Feb 2, 1979, he married Grace (Washburn) Chase in Trinity united church at Preeceville. After retiring from farming, they took up residence at Sturgis, where he worked at the Regional Park for two years and then at the senior citizens housing units. He also worked as an electrician’s helper for a local tradesman. Predeceased by his mother in 1954, his father in 1973, a sister Jean in 1974 and a brother Ralph in 1962, he is survived by his wife, Grace; two stepsons, Dennis Chase and Ronnie Chase; two step-daughters, Linda Hamilton of Ochre River, MN and Shirley MacNaughton of Norquay; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

TANTON – Robert H. Tanton, age 84 years, passed away December 13, 2009 at William Booth Special Care Home in Regina. He is survived by his son Floyd and wife Jennifer of Regina, his daughter Cheryl and husband Calvin Wagar of Regina. He is also sadly missed by his 5 grandchildren; Tara (Tanton) Mason, Jason Tanton, Brad Wagar, Carol (Jason) Danyliw, David Wagar and 7 great grandchildren. Robert was predeceased by his wife Cora in 1981 and his daughter Carol Roberta Tanton in 1961; his sister Noreen Schneider and brother Ronald Tanton; his mother Annie (Ball) Jones and father Frank Tanton. Funeral services were held at the Stenen Hall with Rev. Miles Russell officiating.

TANTON – Ronald A. Tanton aged 70 of Stenen, died on February 16, 1997 at his residence. Born December 10, 1926 in the Ormside district, he attended Ormside School and began farming north of Stenen in 1942. He married Vicky Kindratsky on July 5, 1953 at St. Patrick’s Church in Sturgis and was a member of the Preeceville Masonic Lodge. He worked for his father at the Massey dealership in Stenen as a mechanic and later at Busch Motors in Stenen. A member of village council, he served on the recreation board, school board and was fire chief for many years. Predeceased by his parents, Frank in 1976 and Annie in 1980, he is survived by his wife, Vicky; two sons, Stewart (Janine) of Fernie, BC and James (Arlene) of Stenen; two daughters, Noreen (Terry) Williamson of Red Deer and Lynda Statchuk of Wadena; two brothers, Robert of Canora and Leonard (Isabelle) Ball of Sturgis; one sister, Noreen (Wilmer) Schneider of Keremeos, BC; and nine grandchildren.

TANTON – Verna Julia Tanton age 69, of Calgary, died on March 12, 1990. Funeral service was held in the Stenen Hall, with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. She was born on June 1, 1920 in Neepawa, MB. Predeceased by her husband, Ralph James in 1962; a daughter, Bonnie Dorothy Louise in 1957; her parents and a sister, she is survived by five sons, Harvey (Lorraine) of Morinville, AB, Donald of Uranium City, Lloyd (Karin) of Calgary, Allan (Birgit) of Strathmore, AB and Kenny (Laurie) of Calgary; three daughters, Marlene Kish of Edmonton, Laurel of Calgary and Karen of Sedgewick; three brothers, Ray, Gary and Ken; and two sisters, Marg and Velma all of Vancouver; and 18 grandchildren.

WASHBURN – Floyd Albert Washburn, age 88, died on March 14, 1977 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral held in the Stenen Town Hall. Born at Fergus Falls, Penn., he and his brother, Elmer, came to Canada in 1908 and took up a homestead 10 miles north of Stenen, where he farmed for 54 years. In 1916, he married Hazel Claypool. They retired in 1962 and moved to Stenen. He was a trustree of the Ormsby School district for many years. Besides his wife, he is survived by six daughters, Grace Chase, Isabelle Ball, Cora Tanton, and Ruth Zubko all of Stenen, Lois Arie of Creighton and Marcia Batie of Kaleden, BC; two sons, Robert of Stenen and David of St. Albert, AB; a sister, Lottie Ferguson of Hudson Bay; a brother, George of Worthington, Penn.; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a daughter died in infancy.

WASHBURN – Hazel Bella Washburn, 87 of Stenen, died on April 30, 1986 at the Preeceville Hospital. . Funeral service was held at the Stenen hall and burial in the Stenen Cemetery. She was born October 4, 1899, in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. She received some of her schooling there before the family moved to Stenen when she was twelve years old. Her maiden name was Claypool. She continued her education at the Brush Valley School. In 1916, she married Floyd Washburn and they farmed in the Stenen area for 46 years, before retiring to Stenen in 1962 She was an active member of the U.C.W. and the Dew Drop Inn senior citizens organization at Stenen. Predeceased by her parents, her husband in 1977, two daughters and two sisters, she is survived by two sons, Robert of Stenen and David of St. Albert, AB; five daughters, Grace and Isabelle of Sturgis Marcia of Kaleden, BC. Ruth of Stenen and Lois of Creighton; a brothers Willie of Sturgis; a sister Mabel Washburn of Hudson Bay; 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

WASHBURN – Robert Franklin Washburn, 76 of Stenen, died on July 25, 1999 at the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on January 4, 1923 in Stenen, he attended Ormsby School and helped on the family farm. He worked as a sawyer at sawmills in Sask., Manitoba and BC and hauled mail from 1959 to 1973. He owned and operated a garage in Stenen and retired in 1983. A councilor the Village of Stenen from 1970-76, he served as mayor from 1981-85. He was president of the Stenen Fish & Game Club in 1968 and president of the Stenen Dew Drop in Centre from 1986-95. He married Marianne Parasiuk on July 6, 1955 at Stenen United Church. An active member of the Masonic lodge, he became master mason in 1965, royal arch mason in 1989, junior warden in 1966, senior warden in 1967. He was a member of the Sheba Chapter No. 23 of Kamsack and Wascana Preceptor No. 51 of Regina. For many years he pitched for the Stenen baseball team and was a member of the 1960 team, which was inducted into the Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame in 1965. He later served as the official umpire at Sturgis Sports and Rodeo. He sang in the Easter and Grace United Church choirs and became a resident of the Preeceville Lions Hostel in March 1999. Predeceased by his parents, Floyd and Hazel (Claypool) Washburn, and two sisters, Verona Jane and Cora Dell, he is survived by his wife, Marianne; two daughters, Charlene (Ken) Fisher of Sherwood Park, AB and Brenda (Sheldon) Lisoway of Stenen; a brother, David (Luana) of St. Albert, AB; five sisters, Grace Chase and Isabel Ball both of Sturgis, Marcia Batie of Kaledon, BC, Ruth Zubko of Stenen and Lois Arie of Denare Beach, SK and six grandchildren.

WOTHERSPOON – Florence Wotherspoon, 97 of Saskatoon and formerly of Yorkton, Hyas and Sturgis, died on August 5, 1984 in Saskatoon City Hospital, Funeral service held in Grace United church in Sturgis. Born on March 25, 1887 at Toronto, she was the daughter of David Henry and Olive (Waller) Smith. Orphaned in childhood, she came west to live with the Henry Irwin family near Yorkton, and attended Orkney School. She married James Wotherspoon in June 1908, and they resided on his homestead west of Yorkton. The family moved to the Hyas district in 1915, where they farmed, and retired to Sturgis in 1949, where James died in 1967. In August 1977, the Sturgis home was sold and she went to live with her daughter at Saskatoon, paying extended visits to the homes of hr two sons at Swan River. Active in community work, she was involved with the Grace United Church and its women’s organization; the Sturgis Horticultural Society and the Sturgis winter carnival. Her works as a poet and historian have been recorded in the public archives and district records. Predeceased by her husband and a son, Elvin; she is survived by three sons, Lindsey and William, both of Swan River and Ernest of Cochrane, AB; a daughter, Margaret Cooper of Saskatoon; three grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

WOTHERSPOON – James Wotherspoon was born in Guleph, Ontario on March 25, 1876. He was one of nine children, born to John and Margaret Wotherspoon. Jim came west and worked for farmers at harvest time and also on railway construction in Manitoba. In 1903, Jim filed on a homestead seven miles west of Yorkton. He married Florence (Smith) Irwin on June 1, 1908. They moved to the homestead, where their three sons were born. In 1915 they moved to a farm north of the village of Hyas. They retired to Sturgis in 1949. James passed away October 6, 1967. Funeral service was held in the Sturgis United Church and burial in Stenen community cemetery.

WOTHERSPOON – John Elvin Wotherspoon was born at Yorkton and lived in the Orkney district. His parents were James and Florence Wotherspoon. In 1915 the family moved north of Hyas to a farm. John had health issues and was crippled. He passed away on April 6, 1922 at the age of 13.

YAGELNESKY – Nick Yagelnesky of Stenen, passed away April 29, 2004 at the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral was held in the Preeceville Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Born on May 4, 1931 in the Hyas district to Joe and Annie Yagelnesky, he attended George Albert School. When his family moved to farm north of Stenen, he attended Goodhue School. He purchased his own land north of Stenen. After a few years, he gave up the farm and moved to Osoyoos, BC, where he worked in a mine. When he returned from BC, he worked for CNR for 19 years, when he retired for health reasons. When he returned to the area, he lived for a short period in Sturgis before buying a house in Stenen. Predeceased by his parents, Anne and Joe, a daughter Bonnie, four brothers, Peter, John, Myron and Laddie and three sisters, Frieda, Mary and Jenny, he is survived by seven sons, Dwayne and Perry both of Canora, Don of North Battleford, Richard of Martensville, Gordon of Canora, Jerry and Ken both of Calgary; three daughters, Cheryl (Marty) of Calgary, Linda of Yorkton and Pam (Randy) of Canora; three sisters, Nettie of Preeceville, Olga of Yorkton and Grace (Howard) of Seattle; a brother, Bert of Yorkton and 15 grandchildren.

YASKOW – Stefan Yaskow of Stenen, passed away May 9, 1984 in the Preeceville Hospital. Born on December 27, 1895 in Russia, he married his wife, Natalia, at Ilnitski, Romania. The couple came to Canada in 1926 and he worked on the railroad at Mossbank. They later moved to Flin Flon, where he worked in the mines and then settled in the Stenen area to farm. Before retiring to the Stenen area in 1972, they had also lived and farmed in the Redvers district. Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his wife; a son, Steve of Edmonton; two daughters, Debra of Toronto and Nadine of Winnipeg; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
